Political Buzz 1.24: Role Reversal: Romney Bashes Gingrich in Debate

Mittens opener is accurate. Gingrich actually hired consultants to advise him on how he could skirt the Lobbying Disclosure Act (LDA).

Newt was fined $300,000 for two House Ethics violations and forced to resign as speaker afterwards in 1998 because his House GOP colleagues had little use for him.

Neswt was also the central figure in creating a divisive confrontational political dialogue between Republicans and Democrats in Washington DC that extended after hours.

Newt responds by playing a Romney -- trying to stay above it all. This won't change the race overnight but should serve Romney well by the time Florida Republicans vote.

Hysterical Raisins: Freddie Mac and Newt

In the last GOP debate, Newt was asked about a $300,000 payment from Freddie Mac. Newt tried to claim he was a historian for Freddy Mac and not really a lobbyist. He then pointed out the Freddie Mac money went to the Newt Gingrich group, Inc.

Newt's group received between $1.6 t0 $1.8 million during an 8 year period.

That's some big bucks for a historian. Newt's opportunity society was the basis for the Bush ownership society, the federal policy, that ultimately led to the real estate melt down.

Republicans suggest that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac caused the meltdown and blame two Democrats, Chris Dodd and Barney Frank. Oddly, they never mention Newt Gingrich.

Wikipedia suggests that Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac made the real estate crises worse, but the two organizations did not cause it.
