WASHINGTON — With the 2010 census nearly finished, the government said Tuesday it will save $1.6 billion in the cost of the U.S. population count. The government got strong public response and had no major problems.
The cost of the census was originally budgeted at $14.7 billion. Emergency dollars were approved for additional outreach in cases such as a natural disaster, a flu epidemic or a major operational breakdown.
Because such problems were not extensive, the Census Bureau saved money, officials said. The agency, which is a part of the Commerce Department, also reduced costs due to a higher-than-expected mail response rate of 72 percent and quick field work from census takers who visited homes of people who did not reply by mail.
The Census Bureau said it was still conducting checks on the accuracy of its data, which will be used to distribute House seats and more than $400 billion in federal aid. Results will be released at the end of the year.
Threats of a major boycott from conservatives protesting big government and immigrants wary of law enforcement ultimately did little to disrupt the once-a-decade head count.
Census officials attributed that in part to targeted advertising in hard-to-count areas of the U.S., as well as partnerships with civic groups to help boost awareness of the count.
Michele Bachmann is a Census scofflaw because she believes there is an ACORN conspiracy with the census. "Why does the government need our phone numbers?" complains Bachmann,.
However, Bachmann didn't say anything when George W. Bush decided to bug the Internet.

BACHMANN: You know the question that's not on this survey, Glenn? "Are you a U.S. citizen?" This would be your perfect opportunity to find out how many illegal aliens are in the United States.
Wow! What a provocative idea: use the Census to bust aliens. Perhaps INS should conduct the Census. An imaginary INS bust follows.
INS CENSUS TAKER: Okay, are you a U.S. Citizen?
ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT: I knew this day would come. Rats, foiled again!
INS CENSUS TAKER: (after reading the Miranda rights) I shall now deport you. An INS van pulls up and handcuffs the illegal immigrant.
ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT: I almost got away with it! Nobody warned me about those ACORN census takers.
Watch as The Young Turks video when Bachmann starts up her "interment camp" spiel. Beck starts shaking his head and then just shuts her down. It was too much for even Glenn Beck. It is hilarious.

Same sex and unmarried partner household data are collected for those households where the householder and his or her partner are not married, but are living in a close personal relationship. An unmarried partner can be of the same sex or opposite sex of the householder.
An unmarried partner, in an unmarried partner household, is an adult who is unrelated to the householder, but shares living quarters and has a close personal relationship with the householder. This relationship is based on the self-identification of respondents.
