Hiilary Clinton visits Mumbai, India

(July 17) US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton touched base in Mumbai on Friday night for her five-day visit to India during which the two countries will launch a new chapter in their strategic partnership and deepen their engagement.
Kick starting her visit, Clinton held a breakfast meeting with India Inc leaders Ratan Tata, Mukesh Ambani, Jamshed Godrej, Sudha Murthy, Ashoke Ganguly, Chanda Kochar, Swati Piramal, O P Bhat, R K Krishnakumar, Amrita Patel and others. They are likely to explore measures to boost bilateral business ties during their brainstorming session.
The former US first lady is on her first visit to India as US's chief diplomat and spending the night at the Tower Wing of the Taj Hotel in an act of solidarity with the victims of the Mumbai terror attack on November 26.
On Saturday (July 18), while her meeting with top industrialists was on, Clinton signed the remembrance book of 26/11 survivors. She went on to say that she was touched and pleased the staff of the Taj hotel.
She wrote, "Americans share a solidarity with this city and nation. Both our people have experienced the senseless and searing effects of violent extremism. And both can be grateful and proud of the heroism of brave men and women whose courage saved lives and prevented greater harm on 26/11 and 9/11.”
This move from Hillary is symbolic, as she chose to come to Mumbai’s Taj instead of meeting political leaders in New Delhi.
This is Hillary Clinton's first visit to India after assuming charge as the US Secretary of State in the Obama’s administration early this year. The global economic meltdown has particularly affected the United States. The measures taken by its government to beat the recession are likely to be discussed in the meet.
India's relatively strong growth of 6 per cent and its resilient economy has emerged as a strong focus area for the US in recent years and Clinton's visit is expected to give a further boost to the burgeoning trade-ties between the two countries.
