Ria Novosti: S-300 missile crews destroy ten aerial targets in two minutes

The First Aerospace Defense Brigade has repelled an all-out simulated air strike at the Ashuluk firing range in Russia’s Astrakhan Region.

Four battalions operating S-300 Favorit SA-20 Gargoyle surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems knocked out drones in a difficult tactical situation.

Venezuela is scheduled to get the export version of this missile system to enhance its air defense system.

Ria Novosti: Venezuela expecting delivieries of Russian S-300 missiles

Ria Novosti--Deliveries of S-300 missile defense systems to Venezuela have been delayed, but will go ahead, an official at Rosoboronexport, Russia's state-owned arms export monopoly, said on Tuesday.

In November, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said that Russia had agreed to lend his country over $4 billion to buy weapons.

"There is a contract with Venezuela but it's not yet being implemented," Rosoboronexport special programs director Nikolai Dimidyuk told reporters.
"Venezuela has rescheduled the dates several times, but now we have agreed on a timeframe for the deliveries," he added.

Venezuela is one of the biggest buyers of Russian arms.

The S-300 is a big nightmare for USAF. There is also a new Chinese variant of the same technology called the FT-2000.

The US Patriot missile system is good, but it lacks the passive engagement and active noise radiation techniques of the S-300 which gives the S-300 an edge over US Patriot system.

On the other hand the patriot has track-via-missile (TVM) guidance system and midcourse correction commands which the Russian haven't mastered yet.

The Patriot advanced capability PAC-3 missile is ahead in target engagement and phased array radar, but  it lacks electronics warfare capabilities like the S-300s passive lock-on and active X and C band noise generators which can totally blind an incoming aircraft.

This S-300 is truly 21st century electronics warfare. The Russians are also developing the new S-500 system to replace the existing S-400 which is not exported form Russia.

RIA Novosti: Russia will not deliver S-300 missiles to Iran

RAMENSKOYE (MOSCOW REGION), September 22 (RIA Novosti)--Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has signed a decree banning the delivery of S-300 air defense systems and a host of other major arms to Iran, the Kremlin said Wednesday.
The ban, which includes battle tanks, armored vehicles, large-caliber artillery systems, warplanes, military helicopters, ships and missiles, is part of measures Russia is taking to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 1929 of June 9, 2010.
Russia will not deliver S-300 air defense missiles to Iran as planned because such transfers are prohibited under UN sanctions, the chief of the Russian general staff said Wednesday.

"The decision has been made not to deliver S-300s to Iran," General Nikolai Makarov told journalists at an aircraft equipment production plant in the Moscow Region's town of Ramenskoye.

"They are of course covered by the sanctions," he said, adding: "The leadership decided to suspend the delivery process. We are carrying this decision out."

Answering the question whether a relevant contract with Iran will be cancelled, Makarov said "we will see - it will depend on Iran's behavior."

Western powers suspect that Iran's nuclear enrichment program is aimed at producing weapons, but Tehran claims it needs high-enriched uranium to fuel a reactor producing medical isotopes.

In late August, Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov said a decision on the delivery of S-300 missiles to Iran had not yet been taken.

Russia signed a contract on delivery to Iran of S-300 systems to equip at least five battalions in December 2005. The contract's implementation had so far been delayed as experts considered whether the missiles fall under the sanctions imposed on Iran by the UN Security Council in June.

The sanctions include a ban on supplies on conventional arms to the Islamic Republic. According to the document, "states are prohibited from selling or in any way transferring to Iran eight broad categories of heavy weapons (battle tanks, armored combat vehicles, large caliber artillery systems, combat aircraft, attack helicopters, warships, missiles or missile systems).

However, the S-300 air defense systems are not included in the UN Register of Conventional Arms.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev: Israel won't strike Iran

MOSCOW, September 20 (RIA Novosti) Medvedev said in an interview with CNN aired Sunday that Israeli President Shimon Peres, when on a visit to the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi in August to discuss Russia's arms deals with Iran, told him: "Israel is not going to make any strikes on Iran, we are a peaceful country."

Medvedev said Russia supplies purely defensive armaments to Iran. "Our task is not to strengthen Iran and weaken Israel or vice versa, but [to establish] a normal, quiet situation in the Middle East," he said.

Asked what could happen should Israel nevertheless make a strike, Medvedev said: "This is the worst thing that could be imagined... This would be the most unwise development of events. But my Israeli colleagues told me they are not going to act like this, and I trust them."

Peres said in August that Russia could review its plans to deliver advanced air defense systems to Iran.

"President [Dmitry] Medvedev gave a promise he will reconsider the sales of S-300s because it affects the delicate balance which exists in the Middle East," Peres said during his visit to Sochi.

Russia has until recently delayed the implementation of a 2007 deal with Iran on the supply of S-300s. The contract is worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Israel and the United States have been making proactive diplomatic efforts to influence Russia to drop the plans. They suspect the Islamic Republic of secretly seeking to build nuclear weapons, and have refused to rule out a military strike on its nuclear facilities.

Russian officials said in March that Iran had not yet received any missiles, but Moscow reaffirmed its commitment to fulfill the contract. Medvedev earlier said some payments under the contract had already been made.

S-300s are considered one of the world's most effective all-altitude regional air defense systems, comparable in performance to the U.S. MIM-104 Patriot system.

The latest version of the S-300 family is the S-300PMU2 Favorit, which has a range of up to 195 kilometers (about 120 miles) and can intercept aircraft and ballistic missiles at altitudes from 10 meters to 27 kilometers.

Israel tries to stop sales of Russian S-300 air defense systems to Iran

Editor's Note: The sale of this missile could complicate any Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear facilities. It is possible Israel would launch a preemptive attack on Iran prior to the delivery of the S-300 missiles. I would expect Israeli diplomacy to fall on deaf Russian ears. The Israelis trained Georgian troops and also provided them with new anti-tank weapons that destroyed several Russian tanks in the hostilities in South Osetia.

MOSCOW, June 29 (RIA Novosti) - Israel has intensified its efforts to prevent deliveries of Russian S-300 air defense systems to Iran under a 2007 contract, an Israeli newspaper said on Monday.

According to the Haaretz daily, "Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and asked him to prevent the arms deal from going through."

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak met a week ago at the Paris Airshow with Gen. Nikolai Makarov, chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, and reportedly "asked that he also intervene to prevent the arms sale."

Israel and the U.S. insist that the delivery of advanced air defense systems to Iran would undermine the military balance in the region, and Russia has until recently delayed the implementation of the deal.

Although Russian sources said in March that Iran had not yet received any S-300 air defense systems and the deal relied on the leadership in Moscow, Russia had reiterated its commitment to fulfill the contract, which is worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Haaretz said that during the visit of Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman to Moscow several weeks ago, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told the Israeli official that some payments under the contract had already been made.

Arms deliveries to Iran are also important to Russia because Moscow is quickly losing its positions on key Asian arms markets in China and India.

In light of the recent developments and ahead of a meeting between U.S. President Barack Obama with his Russian counterpart next week, Israel has launched "intensive diplomatic efforts...in order to restore the earlier Russian commitment not to complete the deal," the newspaper said.
