Liz Cheney: Obama Too Inexperienced on Foreign Policy

Liz Cheney, fast becoming the conservatives' leading voice on foreign policy, is stepping up her assault on the Obama administration, charging that the president and his team are apologizing when they should be raising an iron fist.

In her latest critique, given at an event to praise the "Manhattan Seven" who beat back the administration's bid to try 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in New York City, she said, "The last seventeen months, sadly, have been a period of drift and confusion for the country.

And it seems to me clearer and clearer that the Obama doctrine has three prongs. Apologize for America. Abandon our allies. And appease our enemies."

Addressing the Center for Security Policy last week, she added: "Not even halfway into the Obama administration, there are some very grave challenges that have gotten worse. And our friends and our adversaries around the world are unfortunately sensing weakness."

A former State Department official in the Bush administration, Cheney is currently helping her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, write his memoirs.

She has been mentioned in Virginia GOP circles as a potential House or Senate candidate, possibly a challenger to Democratic Sen. Jim Webb who's up for reelection in 2012.

Cheney recently helped start Keep America Safe, boosting her voice on U.S. policy. But it's her closeness to her father and her view on foreign policy that give weight to her new comments, some of which were even sharper than the former vice president's.

Reviewing the president's policies around the world, Cheney—in the New York speech that was ignored in the media—said Obama's Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, was right during the 2008 Democratic primary election when she warned in an about the president's limited experience in an attack ad.
Her pet peeves:

--On Israel, she accused the administration of a "shabby" treatment of Prime Minister Netanyahu. Of course, Hillary Clinton is the Secreatry of State and her expertise at the State Department is highly regarded. 

--On Iran, Cheney said the administration is relying too much on sanctions to stop Tehran's nuclear program.

--She decried the administration's cancellation of a missile shield to be placed in Poland the Czech Republic. "It is more dangerous to be America's friend than it is to be America's enemy," she said.

Rightardia comment: The Obama foreign policy is working quite well. We are building a relationship with Russia who was an ally in World War 2. Any anti-missile systems in Eastern Europe would have made rapprochement with Russia impossible. The Russians have also allowed the US to overfly Russia to Afghanistan.


Israel has been more trouble than it is worth to have this country as an ally. Israle has become an impediment to Middle Eastern peace and Obama is wise to keep the government of Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu at arm's length.  

The Iranian nuclear program threatens Israel's monopoly of nuclear weapons in the Middle east. Iran does not pose a direct threat to the US. The Iranian situation is similar to the trumped up threat the Bush administration created to attack Iraq. 

The only hope for Middle East peace are big changes in the Israeli government. Until then, Obama should not waste time with Netanyahu.


Liz Cheney is a far right ideologue. It is not surprising she would take issue with Obama foreign policy. Obama must have impressed someone or he would not have  won the Noble Peace Prize.

Liz Cheney was ludicrous when she suggested a mother of a US soldier should accept the Nobel Prize for Obama. She also called the US Armed Forces the 'greatest peacekeeping force in the world. "


Of course, international peacekeeping is the mission is the UN, not the US. Rightardia suspects Liz Cheney apparently thinks the US blitzkrieg in Iraq was a peacekeeping mission. This is a good example of the distorted reality that conservatives like Liz Cheney have of the world.

I wonder if Liz can explain why three Democratic presidents have won Noble peace prizes, but no Republican presidents?

Liz Cheney: America needs a commander in chief, not a global community organizer

Rightardia comment: The Obama foreign relations policy has been nothing short of brilliant. Obama has mended fences with the Russians and the US is now allowed to overfly Russia to resupply Afghanistan. We are also working with the Russia to resume trade and eliminate one third of the US and Russian nuclear arsenal.

Hillary Clinton went to India and establsihed a trade deal that could lead to $10 billion in exports.

Bill Clinton is in Pyongyang trying to secure the release of two American journalists.

Liz Cheney is clearly another vindictive Republican like her father who cannot see the forest through the trees. Shes the kind of Republican the Democrats purged form the House and Senate in 2008. We don't need her kind back in Washington DC.

Liz Cheney finally admits that Barack Obama is a US citizen

Politico's Ben Smith cornered Liz Cheney about the subject after the exchange with James Carvelle about the conservative Birther's Obama libel.  Liz Cheney emailed:
"I don't have any question about Barack Obama's right to be President of the United States."

Progressive and liberal Democrats should continue to heap ridicule on conservatives who suggests that Obama is not a US citizen. This is a mean spirited and vindictive attempt to undermine the credibility of President Obama.

Conservatives unhappy Barack Obama is too honest with Russia

Editor's Note: Here we go again. In the GOP view of things, Ronald Reagan ended communism in Russia.  In fact, a French journalist, Andrei Amalrik,  visited the USSR in the 1960s and predicted the decline of communism long before Reagan was president.  His book, Will the Soviet Union Survive Until 1984?  was published in 1970. The USSR was crumbling from the inside.

The GOP likes to have enemies because it is good for defense. George W. Bush was gallivanting around Eastern Europe and Georgia like he was fighting the old Soviet Union. Bush so emboldened the Georgians that they attacked Russian nationals in South Ossetia. The Russian response doomed Bush aspirations in Eastern Europe. Most political scientists in the US would agree with the Obama speech that was given to the New Economic School in Moscow.

Former Bush administration officials are strongly displeased about Obama’s conduct during his recent visit to Moscow.

For example, ex- Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Liz Cheney criticized Obama’s speech, which he delivered to the New Economic School graduates.

“There are two different versions of the story of the end of the Cold War: the Russian version, and the truth. President Barack Obama endorsed the Russian version in Moscow,” Liz Cheney told The Wall Street Journal.

The official disliked Obama’s remarks that the Cold War reached a conclusion because of the actions taken by many nations over many years, including Russia and the countries of Eastern Europe. By Cheney’s opinion, the decisive role was played by “the commitment of free nations to defend liberty and defeat Communism."

“It is irresponsible for an American president to go to Moscow and tell a room full of young Russians less than the truth about how the Cold War ended,” she said.

Cheney wants the White House to take a lesson from President Harry Truman who was one of the ideologists of the Cold War initiation and armament race.

Experts say that Cheney’s attack against irresponsible statements is no surprise. It would be, on the contrary, strange if the efforts to improve Russian-American relationships did not draw Republicans’ criticism. American neoconservatives consider Obama to be a dangerous idealist.

There were neither anti-American nor pro-Russian notes in Obama’s speeches. He simply said what one could never hear form the US Republican Party representatives . Obama simply acknowledged the role of Russia in the history of world civilization. The Russian authorities have a common feeling that Obama is sincere in his approach. He is obviously not liable to the Cold War sentiments.

The US President will unlikely react to conservatives’ attacks, though he will have to defend his position, demonstrating that he protects national interests.

Dick Cheney’s daughter jumps into political fray with attack on Obama, Russia

In the United States, where unemployment is hanging around the risky double digit neighborhood, media coverage of the nagging hot crisis is being replaced by cold war chatter. A lot of this has to do with the Obama administration’s not-so-stunning revelation that Bush and Company was organizing a secret CIA assassination ring that would report directly to Cheney himself.

So it should be little surprise that Liz Cheney should choose this particular moment to take up the mighty pen against U.S. President Barack Obama’s Russia trip.

Liz Cheney, who served as deputy assistant Secretary of State under George W. Bush, lectured the American “commander-in-speech” for cuddling up to the Russians, as well as preaching a “false historical narrative” by telling “a room full of Russians less than the truth about how the Cold War ended” during last week’s visit. As if the Russians need an American leader to teach them their own history in the first place.

“Mr. Obama’s method for pushing reset around the world is becoming clearer with each foreign trip,” Cheney wrote in an op-ed piece for the Wall Street Journal. “He proclaims moral equivalence between the U.S. and our adversaries, he readily accepts a false historical narrative, and he refuses to stand up against anti-American lies.”

Here is a perfect example of American exceptionalism at its most virulent: Nobody, according to the Liz Cheney narrative, should ever hope to reach the high level of moral standards that naturally exists in God’s Country.

This leads directly to the next Neoconservative fallacy, which states that it is beyond the duty or status of the (superior) United States to sit down and have a chat with our enemies, as Barack Obama (gasp!) has proposed to do.

Instead, we should turn up the rhetorical thermostat in our diabolical little think tanks; we should build up our military-industrial complex; we should frighten our enemies to such a degree that they will be forced to acquire weapons of mass destruction before they too have democracy rammed down their throats courtesy of an aircraft carrier. After all, only the United States should own weapons of mass destruction.

In the Neoconservative political script, anybody who challenges the inherent goodness of America’s actions is immediately labeled “anti-American,” or even worse, a full-blown terrorist. You are either with us or against us, as George W. Bush reminded the world after 9/11, simple as that.

“The approach was evident in his (Obama’s) speech in Moscow and in his speech in Cairo last month,” Cheney continues. “In Cairo, he asserted there was some sort of equivalence between American support for the 1953 coup in Iran and the evil that the Iranian mullahs have done in the world since 1979.” 

Cheney is banking her comments on the fact that few Americans fully appreciate the lessons of history, partially due to a bankrupt public education system, another legacy of the slash-and-burn Bush years. To suggest, as Cheney most certainly does, that the United States is not at least partially to blame for its devastated relations with Iran is simply a classic case of self-delusion.

The fact is, in 1953 the CIA embarked on its first covert operation against a foreign government, helping to bring down the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Mohammed Mosaddeq, replacing him with an authoritarian monarch. The despot was knocked off his throne only in 1979 with the Iranian Revolution, a major event in Iranian history that was celebrated by the hostage-taking of 52 American diplomats for 444 days.

But more to the point, there is tremendous irony in Ms. Cheney’s arguments against Barack Obama and his Russian trip.

Cheney is furious that the American president shared the victory over the Soviet Union with “the people of Russia and Eastern (who) stood up and decided that its end would be peaceful.” It’s important to realize that many in the U.S. believe that the collapse of the Soviet Union was solely due to the intervention of the other superpower, the United States.

Of course, this is missing a huge chapter of a very complex story. As Dmitry Babich, a political commentator with Russia Profile, told me, “It’s as if Liz Cheney never heard of the name of Mikhail Gorbachev or perestroika.”

This is not simply explained as a case of the “victors writing history” because “the victors” were not limited to just one people. The victors over the 70-year mistake known as communism hailed from the United States, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, as well as (yes, Liz, it’s true) Russia. The fact that the Soviet Union died a quiet death i.e. without bloodshed underscores the fact that the Russian people, as much as anybody, helped to peacefully eliminate a system that had run its course.

Okay, quiz time: what do the following two sentences in Cheney’s smokescreen article immediately bring to mind?

“The truth, of course, is that the Soviets ran a brutal, authoritarian regime,” writes Cheney. “The KGB killed their opponents or dragged them off to the Gulag.”

Uh, maybe Guantanamo Bay, the 21st century equivalent of the Stalin gulags? Or maybe the “black hole” prisons that the Bushies had built in Eastern Europe. Incidentally, isn’t it funny, so to speak, that historians can say the exact locations of the Stalin gulags, or even Hitler’s concentration camps, but these terrorist detention centers have never been placed on the map? Or maybe the above sentences bring to mind the inexorable loss of liberties that the fruitless war on terror meant for Americans.

Or maybe these two sentences from Liz Cheney bring to mind exactly what Liz Cheney wants the world to forget: that her father, Dick Cheney, may be the central figure of a covert CIA program, which was hidden from Congress and the American people, and designed to eliminate bad guys around the world.
So maybe Liz Cheney’s stress on gulags and authoritarian regimes was not such a bad choice after all, all things considered.
