The Kennedy Center Honorees: Paul McCartney, Oprah Winfrey and More

Every year around the holidays, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts selects and celebrates individuals who have, through their lifetime achievement in the arts, contributed to enriching and enhancing culture in America.

On December 5th, 2010, the Kennedy Center Honors 33rd Annual National Celebration of the Arts was held and videotaped for a television broadcast, which aired last night on CBS.

Before the event at the Kennedy Center, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama hosted a reception for this year's recipients in the East Room of the White House.

Watch this video which features behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the honorees at the White House - Paul McCartney, Oprah Winfrey, Merle Haggard, Bill T. Jones, and Jerry Herman.

The event opened with a tribute to Oprah that was excellent. Rightardia was most interested in the Paul McCartney tribute because the Beatles were truly one of the greatest bands of the past century.

The highlight of the evening was the No Doubt tribute to Paul McCartney.

Gwen Stefani and her band mates performed the Beatles songs “Hello, Goodbye” and “Penny Lane.” The band presented themselves with a distinctive English "clean cut" look with bleached close cropped hair and grey outfits reminiscent of the Beatles.

Gwen Stefani sang her heart out. The Alec Baldwin tribute to McCartney was hysterical.

The 41-year-old singer sang “Hello, Goodbye” and “Penny Lane.” If you missed the show, the video that follows is worth watching.

Politico.com: Merle Haggard: It's hard to be humble

Merle Haggard found Obama to be "very different" from the way he's portrayed in the media: "Not conceited."

Haggard said during  an interview with Rolling Stone: 

He's very humble about being the president of the United States, especially in comparison to some presidents we've had who come across like they don't need anybody's help.

I think he knows he's in over his head. Anybody with any sense who takes that job and thinks they can handle it must be an idiot.

Haggard met Obama when he came to Washington to be recognized as a Kennedy Center honoree earlier this month. the show was broadcast on 12/28/2010.  

Haggard added it's "really almost criminal" how Obama is portrayed in the media.

There seems to be no shame or anything," he said. "They call him all kinds of names all day long, saying he's doing certain things that he's not.


The country singer said he found Obama "very humble."

Maureen Dowd: Bill Clinton Lobbied Gov. Paterson To Keep Caroline Kennedy Out Of Senate

Maureen Dowd's New York Times column this week dropped an interesting tidbit concerning Caroline Kennedy's senate bid along the way. According to Dowd, a "vengeful" Bill Clinton was aggressively lobbying Paterson to keep Kennedy out of the Senate.

Dowd argues that Obama "failed" to help Kennedy. She recalled Obama's failure to lift a finger to help Caroline Kennedy who had lifted him at a crucial moment. The loopy Gov. David Paterson was dragging her through mud and refusing to announce a decision on the appointment for the New York Senate seat.

Paterson was being lobbied by a vengeful Bill Clinton. Bill was still upset at Caroline for bestowing the Camelot mantle on Obama, which Clinton had tried to claim during his campaigns.

Rightardia believes there were other issues. The right wing was circulating a viscous rumor that Kennedy was involved in an extra-marital affair. 


We hope Bill Clinton is over such pettiness that repeatedly cropped up during Hillary's campaign. Bill Clinton seemed to think Hillary was entitled to be president but his conservatism during his second term did not endear the Clinton camp to Democratic progressives. 


Obama ran a disciplined and organized campagn while Bill Clinton ran more personalty based campaigns. The Clintons ignored the Democratic caucuses which were there campaign's undoing.
