Conservative 'C Street House' Residents Face Ethics Complaints For Below-Market Rent

The group of conservative members of Congress who've resided at the notorious "C Street House" may have violated Congressional gift rules by accepting steeply-discounted lodging, new ethics complaints allege.

The watchdog organization CREW (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington) filed complaints Thursday charging Republican Sens. Sam Brownback (Kan.), Tom Coburn (Okla.), Jim DeMint (S.C.) and John Ensign (Nev.), as well as Reps. Mike Doyle (D-Penn.), Heath Shuler (D-N.C.), Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) and Zach Wamp (R-Tenn.), with accepting "improper gifts" from C Street in the form of way-below-market rent.

Other residents past and present did not make the list -- most notably trail-hiking Gov. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.), who lived in the C Street House while in Congress and helped make the place famous by seeking counseling there in the wake of his affair.

According to reports cited in the CREW complaints, the members of Congress residing at C Street pay $950 per month for rent and housekeeping, versus a minimum of $1,700 per month for nearby one-bedroom apartments, $2,400 per month for adjacent hotels or $4,000 for corporate housing.

The CREW data piggybacks in part on similar charges filed earlier this week against the house itself by a clergy group, which complained to the IRS that C Street was improperly using its privileged tax status.

Rightardia has written about C Street which is funded by The Family, a shady right wing Christian group headed by Doug Coe. Coe preaches that the leaders in Washington are not resrticted  by normal socil norms that may expalin why Republicans ignore the US Constitition and have corrupted the National Intelligence Community.

The Iraq War is a good example of this. The intelligence used to justify the war was based on a single source report that intelligence professionals should never provide to policy makers. The basis of good intelligence has always been multiple sources. Americans now know there were no WMDs in Iraq. 

Likewise, the Patriot Act authorized the government to wiretap the Internet. A federal judge ruled Wednesday that government investigators illegally wiretapped the phone conversations of an Islamic charity and two American lawyers without a search warrant.

This group was originally founded by an Scandinavian minister named Abraham Vereide, who was sympathetic to European fascists during World War 2. Vereide started the National Prayer Breakfasts in the US.

Finally, sanity prevailed in spite of the embarrassing Coburn…

Sen. Coburn is a C Streeter who tried to broker a deal for his C Street pal, Sen John Ensign, who was involved with an extra-marital affair with one his staffers. The C Street House is operated by 'The Family,' a shady Christo-Fascist organization headed by Doug Coe. Coe belives men like Coburn and Ensign are special people who are above the law like Adolf Htler, Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong.

Extra-legal nut jobs like this have crossed the line into sedition. There is nothing in the Bible that sanctions this sort of behvior. This is reminiscent of some of the religio-fascist ideas of Hitler and Mussolini.

Rightardia has been saying for along time that the GOP does not really have a voting record that is supportive of veterans. Sen. Coburn's obstructionism is another example.

Did C Street Christian Cult influence the Stupak Amendment ?

Rachel Maddow may have been the first to ask this question but certainly won't be the last to ask: how much influence did The Family, have on Bart Stupak's ( D-MI ) authoring his anti-abortion amendment to the health care bill. Stupak has lived at the house at 133 C Street owned by a secretive religious group known as "The Family" for a long time but denies any knowledge about the group. Many believe this is due to the groups sworn secrecy as opposed to actual truth.

The Fellowship started 70 years ago according to Wikipedia. The founder was an evangelist named Abraham Vereide, who started the so called God led cells comprising Senators, generals, corporate executives and preachers. Vareide believed that God's chosen would construct the kingdom of God on earth with Washington as its capitol. Veriede was openly sympathetic to European fascist movements and he attracted GOP businessmena and polticians who were out of power during the Great Depression and World War 2. Vereide advocated these men could rule behind the scenes so they wouldn't be accused of pride or hunger for power.

The men are striving for what Jeff Coe, the current leader of The Family, calls "Jesus plus nothing." This is to be a government led by Christ's will alone. In his exortations to the faithful Coe uses a David Koresh version of Christianity mixed in with healthy doses of Mao, Stalin and Hitler. Coe is an admireer of all three of the these leaders and believes normal social mores don to apply to such men. Coe often cites the adultery of King David of the ancient Hebrews as an example.

The C Street house is listed in tax records as a church but it seems to function as a rooming house for some Senators and Congressmen. Currently living in the house besides Stupak are Rep. Zack Wamp (R-TN), Sen, Tom Coburn (R OK), Rep. Mike Doyle (D-PA),  and Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC). Sen. John Ensign (R-NV) recently moved out.

This house became a national focus because of the infidelities of Sen.Ensign and Gov. Mark Sanford. Sen. Tom Coburn is also alleged to have attempted to act as a middleman to broker a payoff to Ensign's mistress to keep her quiet. Sanford claims he received spiritual guidance from C Street after his affair became public.

Jeff Sharlet, who has authored a book on this group once lived in another of the Families rooming houses in Arlington, Va. He stated that Stupak's denial is false. Stupak's involvement in this cult is much greater than he is admitting. Stupak was a Family assigned mentor to some of the younger men who roomed with Sharlett and is a leader of the group.

Stupak's denial of knowledge isn't credible for another reason. The Associated Press and other media have written about The Family for 7 years so unless Stupak hasn't read a newspaper it is unlikely that he wouldn't know anything about C Street. Sharlett describes this ulta-secretive organization as a multi-national shadow government operating through small prayer groups called cells and modeled on the Mafia and terrorist organizations.

The blog Empty Wheel notes in relation to The Stupak amendment, that he was boasting about taking reproductive choice away from women. Many News orgaizations have attributed the Stupak Amendment to lobbying by the Catholic Church. It has also been pointed out that there is a growing influence of Christian evangelicals in the Democratic Party as a recognition that they can wield more influence on legislation that way.

Are the C Streeters the real power behind Bart Stupak's legislating in general and the Stupak anti-abortion amendment in particular. His legislation in essence ends Roe v. Wade for most women and takes us back to back alley abortions.

Republican tries to put a spin on neo-fascist C Streeters

[VIDEO CLIP] Zach Wamp of Tennessee is a Republican member of Congress who says he has lived in the C Street house for 12 years. Today he told the Knoxville News Sentinel that the members of Congress who live there are sworn to secrecy. Quoting from the News Sentinel, "The C Street residents have all agreed they won't talk about their private living arrangements, Wamp said, and he intends to honor that pact.


That was on this show on Friday. Today Congressman Wamp's office contacted our office to complain about what I said saying, quote, "This statement made by Ms. Maddow Friday night is false: 'Today he told the Knoxville News Sentinel that the members of Congress who live there are sworn to secrecy.' Congressman Wamp now now denies that the C streeters are sworn to secrecy.

The on-the-record quotation from Mr. Wamp was that C Street residents have all agreed they won't talk about their private living arrangements. The News Sentinel characterized the agreement as a "pact."

Background on The Family

The movement was founded in Seattle in 1935 by Abraham Vereide, a Norwegian immigrant and traveling preacher. He opposed President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal and was worried that socialist politicians were about to take over Seattle's municipal government. Vereide organized a small group of businessmen sympathetic to European fascism, fusing the far right with his own polite but authoritarian faith

Prominent members of Seattle's business community recognized his success with those who were "down and out" and asked him to give spiritual direction to their group who were "up and out." He organized prayer breakfasts for politicians and businessmen that included anti-Communism and anti-union discussions. Vereide was subsequently invited to set up similar meetings among political and business leaders in San Francisco and Chicago.

Abraham Vereide believed he was contacted by God in 1935 who told the message in the Bible was misinterpreted. It was his mission to bring community leaders to Christ. This elite would then use private means the help the less fortunate. Verveide was pro-capitalist and anti-union. He was the trickle down advocate of the 1930s.

Doug Coe,the modern leader of the Family, has told his C street followers In Washington DC that they are above the Madding Crowd and that normal rules don't apply to the elite. The family consider themselves the “new chosen,” congressmen, generals, and foreign dictators who meet in confidential “cells,” to pray and plan for a “leadership led by God,” to be won not by force but through “quiet diplomacy.”

Coe believes his followers are above the law and has used King David as an example. King David stole his general's wife and then had the general assassinated. Coe believes such behavior is appropriate for his special group of right wing Republicans. This philosophy may explain why Republicans presidents such as Nixon, Reagan and George W. Bush authorized extralegal activities that were unconstitutional.

In his preaching, Coe repeatedly urges a personal commitment to Jesus Christ. It’s a commitment Coe compares to the blind devotion that Adolph Hitler required from his followers.

"Hitler, Goebbels and Himmler were three men. Think of the immense power these three men had, these nobodies from nowhere,” Coe said.

Later in a 2008 sermon, Coe said: "Jesus said, ‘You have to put me before other people. And you have to put me before yourself.' Hitler, that was the demand to be in the Nazi party. You have to put the Nazi party and its objectives ahead of your own life and ahead of other people."

Coe also quoted Jesus and said: “One of the things [Jesus] said is 'If any man comes to me and does not hate his father, mother, brother, sister, his own life, he can't be a disciple.’ So I don't care what other qualifications you have, if you don't do that you can't be a disciple of Christ."

Writer Jeff Sharlet lived among Coe's followers six years ago and was troubled by their secrecy and rhetoric.

“We were being taught the leadership lessons of Hitler, Lenin and Mao. I would say, ‘Isn’t there a problem with that?’ They [The Family] seemed perplexed by the question. Hitler’s genocide wasn’t really an issue for them. It was the strength that he emulated,” said Sharlet, who is a Contributing Editor at Rolling Stone and is an Associate Research Scholar at the NYU Center for Religion and Media in New York.
