Carlyfornia might be even less qualified than the Governator

Wirehead worked for AT&T BCS (Business Communication Systems) and Lucent Technologies when Carly Fiorina was one of the executives. While at Lucent she was hired as the CEO of HP. The word in Lucent was it was a good move for her because the Lucent was getting ready to unload her.

Carly attributed her success as an executive to her liberal arts background while most of the other executives had business college backgrounds. Why is a nice girl from Texas running for governor of California?

1. CEO Fail: Carly Fiorina was named among the nation's 20 worst CEOs by Portfolio magazine. No wonder. Under her leadership, Hewlett-Packard's stock fell 60%, and 28,000 employees were fired. Her acquisition of COMPAQ was controversial and led to her downfall. She was fired, but her $21 million golden parachute made for a soft landing. Tweet this

2. Iran Dealings? When HP's stock fell, it wasn't for lack of selling products - in Iran. Which happens to be illegal. The San Jose Mercury News reported that in the past 12 years, the company has used a Middle East distributor to sell millions of dollars' worth of merchadise to Iran, "sidestepping a U.S. ban on trade with the country." 3. What, Me Vote? Running a company (into the ground) is hard work! A CEO is far too busy to vote! Or so it seems. Fiorina's voting record looks like Swiss cheese. She cast a ballot in only 6 of 14 elections held since 2000. She even skipped the 2000 and 2004 presidential primaries and the 2003 gubernatorial recall election. If she's so disdainful of democracy, what makes her think she deserves to represent California in the Senate? Tweet this

4. McCain's Pain: Pity Fiorina's poor campaign manager. Fiorina's tendency to go off the reservation ended her short-lived career as a John McCain for President spokeswoman after she said none of the presidential or vice presidential nominees was qualified to run a major American corporation - including her boss, John McCain. Perhaps he votes too often? Tweet this

5. Primary First: All of this assumes that Fiorina even gets the Republican nomination. That might be assuming too much. Her main competition, State Sen. Chuck DeVore, is the darling of the tea-party set. We've been seeing the fringe element taking over establishment Republicans across the country.

Which makes one wonder why Fiorina has been bragging up her support from the National Republican Senatorial Committee. We saw how far national party support took Dede Scozzafava in New York's 23rd District. Tweet this

Google voice: AT&T says it violates net neutrailty laws

AT&T sent a letter to the FCC protesting Google's blocking of telephone calls from consumers that use its Google Voice service to call phone numbers with inflated access charges in certain rural areas.  By blocking these calls, Google reduces its access expenses, giving it an advantage phone carriers are prevented from enjoying and thus skewering the competition principles in U.S. network neutrality laws, AT&T claims.  Google argued that Google Voice must not be accorded the same treatment as services from phone carriers. AT&T sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission protesting Google's blocking of telephone calls from consumers that use its Google Voice service to call phone numbers with inflated access charges in certain rural areas. By blocking these calls, Google reduces its access expenses, giving it an advantage phone carriers are prevented from enjoying and thus skewering the competition principles in U.S. network neutrality laws. Google Voice is a Web-based phone management service the search engine offers to let users funnel all of their phone calls via one new number to work, home and mobile phones. Rightardia comment: AT&T is wandering into a murky area because most phone lines use old analogue lines or digital Integrated Services Data Network (ISDN) that are that many businesses use. Google voice runs over  Internet data networks, rather than voice networks, and is probably Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) based. AT&T may be comparing apples to oranges. Many Internet Service providers like Comcast are prioritizing data traffic and to give a lower priority to streaming video that is bandwidth intensive. Most arguments about 'net neutrality' have pertained to data networks rather than voice. John Yoo subverts the US Constitution again

The no-warrant surveillance program initiated after the September 11 terrorist attacks relied on a "factually flawed" legal analysis that John Yoo wrote.

Apparently Yoo became the 'go-to guy' for any illegal activities the Bush White House wanted.

A report was compiled by the inspectors general of the nation's top intelligence agencies, the Pentagon and the Justice Department.

 The 38-page unclassified version of the document reaches a cautious conclusion, stating that any use of the information collected under the surveillance program "should be carefully monitored."

The program, launched by President Bush within weeks after the September 11 attacks, allowed for  the interception of communications into and out of the United States. The Bush Presidential Surveillance Program bypassed the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA Court)  if there was a "reasonable basis" that one of the parties was a terrorist.In the past a US attorney would have to go before A FISA Court judge to get a wiretap authorized.

Although some intelligence collection has a specific target, surveillance is 'vacuum cleaner' collection. AT&T,Verizon and other telecommunications companies split large SONET OC256 fibre optic lines to collect all incoming and outgoing Internet and email traffic in the US. It then used NSA mainframe computers to perform key word searches.

Such activities were forbidden by federal law in the past because the NSA was not allowed to conduct domestic surveillance except in very special circumstances. The effectiveness of the program is not known, but only a handful of terrorists were arrested after the program stated.

Update: MSNBC indicated the IG report on the Keith Olbermann reported that the NSA surveillance program led to no arrests. James Reisen of the New York times discussed this on the Olbermann show. It appears the government was using the surveillance for data mining. In the past there were reports that Bill Clinton and journalists were targeted.

The IG report sharply criticizes the legal advice provided to the White House by the Justice Department.

Among other things, the report cites a Justice Department conclusion that "it was extraordinary and inappropriate that a single DOJ attorney, John Yoo, was relied upon to conduct the initial legal assessment" of the surveillance program.
