Nearly 1:2 Americans lives in poverty or have low income according to US Census data. Of course, all the GOP will do is whine about the low or no income earners who don't pay federal income tax.
Programs like Food Stamps and tax credits for the poor have kept many families afloat. Although the GOP bemaons the welfare state, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Food Stamps) and the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) are the only significant US welfare programs and both are fraying.
The states worst hit by the recession are in the south and west such as Arizona, New Mexico and South Carolina, The south and west are dominated by conservative politicians, low wages and right to work laws that weaken unions.
The US now has a a "have more" and "have not" society with the fifth most unequal distribution of income in the world. Middle class people who should have known better bought into Reaganomics, supply side economics and the Bush Ownership Society.
The disaster that has befallen America was caused by the offhshoring or jobs, the anti-social tax policies of Republicans and bull headed deregulation.
