IQ changes during adolescence and contact sports
Science Daily recently featured an article that indicated IQ can change about 20 points up or down between ages 16 and 20.
The University College of London study noted:
Adolescent IQs can go up by more than 20 points – the difference between an above-average score of 120 and a highly gifted child at 140. IQ's can also fall by up to 18 points.
This suggests that high school teenager should be engaging in activities that will accelerate their IQ.
According to Wikipedia, the average IQ in the US is 98, which is 31st in the world. This means an average American teen could see their IQ increase to 118 or drop to 80.
This has some implications for high school athletics. Soccer, for example, is not the contact sport that American football is but there are headers in the sport that suggest soccer players should wear manadatory head gear to protect the fore brain.
Rightrdia has also talked about Ricky the Rightard. All Ricky talked about was "knocking heads' when he played football.
Rightrdia thinks perhaps his head got knocked on too many times because Ricky just isn't a bright person.
Mothers may need to think about their kids playing contact sports. It really makes more sense for kids to be doing something more intellectual like learning to play a musical instrument, taking art lessons or learning to dance.
It seems intuitive that kids that are taking accelerated classes in high school and attending college after graduation may benefit with an IQ boost.
It's a "use of lose it" scenario.
When The Major was in high school, the standard joke was that most of the football players would end up in insurance or real estate. Ricky the Rightard works in insurance.
