US women's team finishes second in the World Cup.

Japan won the FIFA world cup in an exciting game. The US team outplayed the Japanese and could have won the game, squandering leads two times.

Alex Morgan was set to score a winning goal in the closing minutes when a Japanese player slide tackled her which saved the game for Japan and forced a shoot out. The Japanese player was red carded.

A red card foul is serous and means the player is ejected from the game and a replacement is not allowed on the field.

If the NFL had such a rule, intentional personal fouls would become rarer as is the case in US soccer.

Because the foul was outside of the box, the US team got a free kick rather than a penalty kick. Of course Alex Morgan could have missed the shot on goal, too.

The US team was outplayed by the French, but still won the semi-final game.

This is what is great about soccer: the sport is far less predictable than American football.

Congratulations are due to Japan. We hope this helps the sagging Japanese spirit after the tsunami and nuclear disaster.

Congratulations are also due to the US team. Being second in the world is hardly shabby. We wish American men's soccer was as distinguished as the women's.
