In New York State, the battle for gay marriage came down to the wire in the Republican-controlled state senate.
In the end, four Republican senators defied their party to back same-sex marriage, making New York state the sixth state in the US to allow same-sex marriage.
President Barack Obama has been giving speeches to gay activists, but he still says he personally believes marriage is between a man and a woman.
New York's Conservative Party has vowed to go after the Republicans who voted for gay marriage.
But these four legislators have no doubt found a new source of support.

Mario Piperni had some interesting comments on the story:
“What is straight? A line can be straight, or a street, but the human heart,
oh, no, it’s curved like a road through mountains.”
~Tennessee Williams, A Streetcar Named Desire, 1947
