Ria Novosti: Egyptian-born Saif al-Adel has become the acting leader of al Qaeda

NEW DELHI, May 17 (RIA Novosti) Pakistani News daily said on Tuesday, quoting an anonymous source that the new acting leader of  al Qaeda had been identified: Egyptian-born Saif al-Adel.

The paper said al-Adel was a close ally of al Qaeda's ideologist, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and was responsible for the network's international contacts. Al-Zawahir was the number two man but not well-respected in the movement because he is a control freak and also only places Egyptians in key positions.

According to the daily, al-Adel was appointed at an urgent meeting of al Qaeda's commanders. The term "acting" implies a temporary appointment.

Bin Laden was killed on May 2 in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad, north of the capital Islamabad, during a raid by U.S. Navy Seals.
