Politico 44: GOP getting realistic about closing down the government

Speaker John Boehner is warning his Republicans that Democrats would “win” a government shutdown and the GOP would suffer a political catastrophe.

Boehner said this during a closed-door, 90-minute meeting on House Republicans on Monday night . . .

Boehner’s opinion was quickly backed up GOP lawmakers who served in Congress during 1995, when former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) squared off with then President Bill Clinton by shutting down the government twice.

If the GOP closes the government down, this would be the third time this has occurred since 1990.  A government shut-down has occurred only four times in the history of the United States.

The threatened shut-down is a bad idea during an economic recovery. Rightardia thinks the GOP is starting to see the light and blinking.
