Yesterday we looked at how the makeup of the Democratic Party in the House has shifted from moderate and conservative to much more progressive. Today we look at two of the issues that may have heralded that shift. Jesse Russell has this report:
It may be a coincidence, but a number Democrats in the House who sided with Republicans to vote against extending unemployment benefits and against the health care legislation are about to start looking for new jobs of their own.
When it comes to the emergency unemployment extension 16 House Democrats voted against the extension. Of those 16, two retired and only three went on to win reelection. Although Illinois’ Melissa Bean is still waiting for all of the results to be tallied in her tight race, her fate looks seal and would make it 11 Democrats who voted against unemployment going down.
As for the final health care bill, 34 Democrats voted against it, of which only 13 survived Election Day. North Carolina Representative Heath Schuler is the only Democrat to vote against both the emergency unemployment and health care and survive reelection.
Most of the Republican gains came at the expense of Blue Dog democrats in the South. Blue Dog moderates seats were converted to hard right Republican.
