NYTimes.com: George W. Bush Talks With Matt Lauer

There were other moments when Mr. Bush was defensive . . .even chuckling about history’s final verdict.

I hope I’m judged a success, but I’m going to be dead, Matt, when they finally figure it out.”

Throughout his tumultuous two terms, Mr. Bush rarely looked comfortable in formal interviews and news conferences.

Actually, the latest surveys have not been kind to Mr. Bush. The Iraq War was a $ one trillion dollar mistake and Bush left a horrible economic mess for the Democrats to fix. George W. Bush's last three presidential ratings are in red. Obama's only rating is in blue.

Bush's last three ratings put him in the bottom 10 per cent of presidents.

As far as history goes and all of these quotes about people trying to guess what the history of the Bush administration is going to be, you know, I take great comfort in knowing that they don’t know what they are talking about, because history takes a long time for us to reach.”— George W. Bush, Fox News Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008

An unscientific poll of professional historians completed the same week produced results far worse for a president clinging to the hope that history will someday take a kinder view of his presidency than does contemporary public opinion.
