POLITICO: George W. Bush was no 'dumb idiot'

Tony Blair recently told The Guardian:

"One of the most ludicrous caricatures of George is that he was a dumb idiot who stumbled into the presidency," writes Blair. "No one stumbles into that job, and the history of American presidential campaigns is littered with the corpses of those who were supposed to be brilliant but who nonetheless failed because brilliance is not enough."

He continues: "To succeed in U.S. politics, or that of the U.K., you have to be more than clever. You have to be able to connect and you have to be able to articulate that connection in plain language. The plainness of the language then leads people to look past the brainpower involved. Reagan was clever. Thatcher was clever. And sometimes the very plainness touches something else: a simplicity that is the product of a decisive nature."

Rightardia thinks the best description of Bush was that he 'a fortunate son." Bush won the election in 2001 because Al Gore only ran a 17 state campaign and Bush's brother, Jeb,  was the governor of Florida.

Jeb made sure that minority voters were purged form the voting rolls, traffic was congested in minority neighborhoods on the election day and the polls closed even while voters were in line waiting to vote. The Supreme Court awarded the election to Bush under a questionable fast track Bush appeal using the Voting Rights Act as the premise for the suit. MLK likely rolled over in his grave during the Supreme court proceedings.

Bush inherited 8 years of Democratic rule that had the economy running in fast forward. It took the public six years to realize the county was heading in the wrong path.You will have to give Bush and the GOP credit for hiding the true state of the economy. 

It is interesting that Americans gave Bush six years to fail and Obama appears to be only getting two years to prove his mettle.

Bush was a marginal president who had a learning disability. Historians have been ranking him in the bottom ten per cent of presidents according to Wikipedia.

Rightardia thinks Blair is exaggerating Bush's abilities. Blair should have known better to get into bed with Bush on the Iraq war.
