GOP has become the party of Debbie and David Downer

The Republican "Party of No' has gotten even worse. It has become the party of Debbie and David Downer. Whatever the president, the Democratic Party or the Democratic Senate do, it it wrong. This is after eight years of a disastrous conservative government of George W. Bush that that was fueled by ideology rather than pragmatism.

Should Obama waste a lot of his precious time on the terrorist threat? No, let his Homeland Security and intelligence professionals take care of it. It is clear that the terrorist threat is based upon years of misguided policies in the Middle East. The US destabilised the Iranian government and invaded Iraq and Afghanistan. Conservatives would also like us to rush into Yemen, another fool's errand.

Unless the US is willing top put economic pressure on Israel, future attacks on the US will continue and a certain percentage will succeed. If the US wants to play hardball with other countries by invading or undermining the governments, some terrorist push back should be expected.

Any suggestion that terrorism can be prevented is naive. The British experienced many successful attacks on the part of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) until there was a political settlement.

Recently U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell commented on American loan guarantees to Israel. Mitchell had said that his country could withhold support on loan guarantees to pressure Israel in negotiations with the Palestinian Authority. This is exactly what the US needs to do to get Israel to the table. Undoubtedly the Republican Debbie Downers will oppose such an option.

We also agree with another suggestion that Obama should provide a roadmap to the Israelis and tell them what to do since they are so intransigent.  Jerusalem should be internationalised and all Israeli building should stop in the West Bank.

Our government should continue to pull economic and military support until the Israelis come to the table. If they refuse, they should be abandoned as an ally.

Let the Germans fix the Middle East. They were the ones who caused the problem to begin with. The US should not continue to be pushed around by a country of 7.5 million people or fight unnecessary wars on behalf of Israel.
