Workers Independent News: Teamsters In Philly Go On Strike At The Red Cross

12/04/09

Submitted by Doug Cunningham

Teamsters in Philadelphia went on strike Thursday to protest standards at Red Cross facilities. Jesse Russell reports:

Just weeks after a transit strike that brought the city of Brotherly Love to a standstill Philadelphia is bearing witness to a new strike.
Thursday morning Red Cross workers represented by the Teamsters walked off the job to protest unfair labor practices and working conditions at blood service facilities. The strike comes in response to a report by Jobs with Justice that highlighted situations in that could endanger donors and employees alike.
According to the report cutbacks in pay has led to a high turnover rate that has resulted in less experienced workers handling patients. Workers are also allegedly expected to work long hours that can lead to fatigue. The Red Cross has been hit with $21 million dollars in fines by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration due to issues of blood safety.
Rightardia comment:  Over the years we have heard a lot of stories about the American Red Cross. We will put it this way: it is not a charity that Rightardia would ever support.
