And with the holiday season upon us also comes the right’s War On Christmas campaign. Here’s the lead from the Stand For Christmas web site.
Millions upon millions in our nation deeply value the great truths of Christmas and the holiday’s inspiring place in American life and culture. We hope you will take a moment to “Stand for Christmas” by sharing feedback about your Christmas shopping experiences.
A run through the list of retailers and the comments posted by the fanatical right is frightening. Nothing will please these people until a Christian theocracy is set up. Here’s a sampling of the comments posted for Gap. Much has to do with the holiday commercial the retailer posted (see below). We’re asking YOU to decide which retailers are “Christmas-friendly.” They want your patronage and your gift-shopping dollars, but do they openly recognize Christmas?
Just saw the new Gap commercial. I am so disappointed that I will not be shopping at Gap or her sister stores again until they have a change of heart. I don’t understand why they can’t just say Merry Christmas, accept my money, and end it there. I don’t expect them to have a live nativity outside their store or give out tracts with each purchase. Just celebrate the holiday America has always celebrated, Christmas, and keep your mouths shut!!
I was SHOCKED at the TV ad! Such a blatant choice to exclude the Christian community. Now we must blantantly choose to exclude the Gap from our shopping experience!
The new TV commercial by the GAP still refuses to mention Christmas and finishes with Happy Holidays. I do not find this acceptable anymore. Only Merry Christmas is an acceptable response this time of year.
I was completely disgusted by the commercial on tv for the GAP. Not only was Christmas so casually mentioned, but to push the idea that it’s ok to do whatever feels right is so obviously against God and His Word. I for one will no longer shop at any company affiliated with the GAP. I pray that others choose to join as well. I also encourage others to pray for the people involved that God could reach them in some way and change their hearts and minds. The following one is especially lovely.
First thing I notice is that they are only playing non-Christian Christmas songs (Jingle Bells, etc.). Unacceptable. I ask a clerk, “What is the reason for the season?” and I get back “What?”. I buy a shirt and when they ask me what kind of wrapping paper, I reply that I want nativity paper or something showing the baby Jesus. They say they only have snowflakes and snowmen and green/red paper. What does green and red have to do with JESUS?Sigh.
Rigtardia comment: Secular Human worked in advertising for five years and most advertisers avoided religious content in Christmas promotions because advertisers are aware that everyone is not a Christian in the US. In general Santa Claus and Christmas trees were used as well as boughs of holly in ads, but Christian symbols were not. Of course, Christian illustrators would sometimes infiltrate newspapers and ad agencies and try to Christianise the ads when they could get away with it.
