Did Washington and Jefferson grow and smoke weed?

The short answer is that both grew it, but neither made money. Jefferson even invented a better "hemp brake" to separate the fibers from the stalks, something he thought was so important to agricultural that he refused to patent it. This suggests that Jefferson ran an advanced marijuana processing facility and  was a true Democratic gentleman.

In the 1700s and 1800s there was no stigma with reefer madness so it is likely both men did toke up, but there is no proof. The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws mentions both men grew hemp for economic reasons. You can not only smoke hemp, but it can also be used to make clothing.
