Sarah Palin's most consequential choice since leaving the White House may be her co-author - a staunch conservative, devoted evangelical Christian, and intensely partisan Republican from far, far outside the Beltway.
Lynn Vincent spent the summer--while Sarah Palin was still the Alaskan governor, working to write a closely-guarded 400 page memoir, "Going Rogue: An American Life."
The book is due out from Harper-Collins Nov. 17 - but it shot to the top of the Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble best-seller lists Wednesday due to advance sales as word of its publication spread.
Vincent's past projects include co-writing the memoir of General William Boykin, who blasted the media and President George W. Bush alike for ending his career over his casting the war on terror in overtly religious terms.
General William Boykin
Boykin was the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency for a while and the Major considered him to be a real nut job. Boykin's wife left him because she considered him to be a religious fanatic. In the 1980s, many evangelicals had infiltrated the Armed Services and some like Boykin were promoted to general officer rank.
Boykin achieved made statements that appeared to frame the War on Terror in religious terms, The following day the Los Angeles Times quoted Boykin about Osman Atto in Mogadishu: Well, you know what? I knew that my God was bigger than his (Atto's). I knew that my God was a real God and his was an idol."
Boykin's remarks stirred much anger in the Muslim world Rep. John Conyers and 26 supporters put forward H. RES. 419 "Condemning religiously intolerant remarks and calling on the President to clearly censure and reassign Lieutenant General Boykin."
President George Bush distanced himself from Boykin's statements. Hapless Donald Rumsfeld defended Boykin, describing him as "an officer that has an outstanding record in the United States armed forces . . ."
A ten month investigation carried out by the Defense Department later concluded in August 2004 that Boykin had broken rules in giving the speeches to religious organizations. He also hadn't declared the reimbursement of travel funds by one of the religious groups who had hosting the speaking events.
The Guardian (UK) connected Boykin with secret Israeli counterinsurgency assistance in Iraq, allegedly including assassination squads. Boykin was also connected to covert operations in Iran in 2005. LTG Boykin eventually retired on August 1, 2007.
Donkey Cons
Lynn Vincent's most political book, "Donkey Cons," describes the Democratic Party since its inception as "pro-gangster" and the "party of treason and subversion." Her work for World Magazine, where she was an editor, includes a description of President Barack Obama as the "minority survivor" of the "black genocide" - that is, abortion.
Palin's choice of Vincent suggests that her book will be a partisan tract.
