The Colombian government says it is close to signing an agreement with the United States. The deal would make Colombia a hub for American military operations in South America.
The deal would give US forces access to at least three air bases. This move that is likely to be opposed by those who argue Colombia's sovereignty is being compromised.
Venezuela is also likely to oppose the move of additional US forces into South America. Approximately 70,000 US troops and mercenaries are already in South America
Humphrey Hawksley reports.
