Most IT system administrators do not plan to migrate to Windows 7

Nearly 60 percent of IT administrators do not plan to migrate to Microsoft Windows 7, a survey by ScriptLogic(R)Corporation revealed. Part of the problem is there is no migration path from XP Pro to Windows 7. Only Vista can be migrated to Windows 7 creating a dilemma for IT staff.

The survey was sent to 20,000 Microsoft Windows systems IT administrators (sysadmin).  More than 1,000 responses included key findings such as:

-- Nearly 60 percent (59.2) of respondents said they have no plans to deploy Windows 7 at this time;34 percent plan to deploy by the end of 2010 and only 5.4 percent plan to deploy by the end of 2009 - quickly following scheduled general availability in October 2009.

-- IT administrators stated the biggest barriers to deploying Windows 7 as a lack of time and resources (42.4 percent), application compatibility (38.9 percent),followed by OS deployment/migration (8.8 percent), hardware support (7.6 percent) and migration of user settings (3.2 percent).

This survey  is similar to another published in Rightardia. Many sysadmins do not plan to deploy Windows 7 until after its first Service Pack is released. Many industry observers have noticed that Linux is as robust as Microsoft desktop products and is open source.

If IT staff has to reimage desktop PCs to install Windows 7, it would be wise to test Linux versions such as Fedora (Red Hat) or Ubuntu to save migration dollars. This could save a company thousands of dollars.
