Editorial: Public Health Care is a no brainer
The US has the most expensive health care system in the world and one in five Americans isn't covered. If you lose your job, you lose your health care because it is linked to employment.
If you get cancer a second time or some other condition returns, you aren't covered because of the pre-existing condition clause. Insurance companies might even decide you chances of recovery are not good and deny you or a family member treatment.
There are only two industrial nations in the world that don't have public health care: the US and South Africa. No country that has gone to public health care has ever returned to private.
Why is that? It's because the middle man, the insurance company will be eliminated. Some of these companies make a 30 per cent profit by denying insurance claims to beneficiaries. This is also the the main reason that health care in the US costs twice as much as it does in Europe.
In the UK, it costs a citizen US$600 for health insurance. Private insurance is also available, but 88 per cent of the people who live in the British Isles have public health insurance. The UK health care system is rated 18th in the world by the World Health Organization (WHO). Canada is rated 30th and the US is 37th. The French are rated first in the world.
What are the major features of the new system the US Congress is proposing? First and foremost, the act would make health care in the US a right.
There will be no more co-pays or deductibles for preventive care. There will be no more rate increases for pre-existing conditions, gender, or occupation. There will be an annual cap on your out-of-pocket expenses and group rates of a national pool if you buy your own plan. There will also be guaranteed, affordable oral, hearing, and vision care for your kids.
Will it be the end of private health care? No, but it will be curtailed. More affluent Americans will be able to purchase private health care and some doctors will not opt into the public health care system. Is the government obligated to support a private health care system that is dysfunctional. Not at all.
Americans will have a better system and real choice for the first time. Your will not have your health care linked to employment like an indentured servant.
It is a no brainer. Don't look at a gift horse in the mouth. Private enterprise has milked the US health care cow for far too long.
