Washington Whispers: They 'break" presidents, don't they?

The term "breaking" has been used with horses and slaves.

It was Willie Lynch, a white plantation owner, who developed procedures to break black men and turn them into slaves.

The document called the Willie Lynch Doctrine was distributed to other plantation owners and politicians in the United States. The documents instructed them on how to transform a man into a slave.

Willie Lynch was mysterious 18th century business man considered to be an expert slave handler. 

The term "Lynching" originally referred to the hanging of a black man and was named after Lynch who acted as a consultant to the wealthy plantation owners, many of  who were also the politicians of the time in the US.

Lynch developed the process of breaking a slave, a technique for taming and subduing a man to behave like a slave. The process was similar to that of taming a wild horse.

The process made it easier to control the man and his family physically. In the end black women would raise her children to eat out of the slave masters hands, just as a horse does.

If the process was done correctly it would create an endless supply of cheap labor.

The doctrine uses the basic principles of brainwashing and mind control which are still used today in armed conflicts such as in the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

Lindsey Graham admitted shortly after the 2008 elections during a private meeting  with Sen. Jeff Bingaman that "the decision's already been made to bring Obama down on health care."

This Republican strategy didn't become fully apparent until mid-2009, writes Russ Feingold, when Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina came right out in public and said,

If we're able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him.

Feingold has written a book, "While America Sleeps," which will be published at the end of February. The book describes the GOP plan to "break" Obama.

I don't know how it could be more stark or clear: this entire society is being dominated by corporate power in a way that may exceed what happened in the late nineteenth century, early twentieth century. 

The incredible power these institutions now have over the average person is just overwhelming: the way they can make these trade deals to ship people's jobs overseas, the way consumers are just brutalized and consumer protection laws are marginalized, the way this town here—Washington—has become a corporate playground. 

Since I've been here, this place has gone from a government town to a giant corporate headquarters.

To me, the whole face of the country—whether it be the government, the media, agriculture, what happens on Main Street—has become so corporatized that the progressive movement is as relevant as it was one hundred years ago, maybe more so. 

It's the same issues. It's just that power, because of money, international arrangements and communications, is so overwhelming that the average person is nearly helpless unless we develop a movement that can counter that power. 

I know we've all tried over the years, but this is a critical moment. We need to regenerate progressivism and make it relevant to what's happening right now. 

But there's no lack of historical comparison to a hundred years ago. It's so similar; the only real difference is that corporate power is even more extended. 

It's the Gilded Age on steroids.

Weekly Address: The Republican Corporate Power Grab

The President explains how the most dire warnings about the Citizens United case have been proven valid as Republicans in Congress have blocked legislation to fix it.

When the Supreme Court ruled in faor of Citizens United, it emboldened the corporatists in the US. the McCain-Feingold Act had bipartisan support and the  was passed to:

• The increased role of soft money in campaign financing, by prohibiting national political party committees from raising or spending any funds not subject to federal limits, even for state and local races or issue discussion.

• The proliferation of issue advocacy ads, by defining as "electioneering communications" broadcast ads that name a federal candidate within 30 days of a primary or caucus or 60 days of a general election, and prohibiting any such ad paid for by a corporation (including non-profit issue organizations such as Right to Life or the Environmental Defense Fund) or paid for by an unincorporated entity using any corporate or union general treasury funds. 

(Note: The decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission does not change this provision of The Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 (BCRA).

It also fails to overturn the ban on political donations by foreign corporations and the prohibition on any involvement by foreign nationals in decisions regarding political spending by U.S. subsidiaries.)

Don't Sell Out, America! from Jordan Peele

The  latest ABC News/Washington Post poll finds that 80 percent of Americans oppose the Supreme Court ruling tha overturned the McCain-Feingold Act including 65 percent who “strongly” oppose it, an unusually high intensity of sentiment. 
 
Seventy-two percent of those polled support the idea of a legislative workaround to try to reinstate the limits the court lifted. 

The bipartisan nature of these views is striking in these largely partisan times. The court’s ruling is opposed, respectively, by 76, 81 and 85 percent of Republicans, independents and Democrats; and by 73, 85 and 86 percent of conservatives, moderates and liberals. 

Majorities in all these groups, ranging from 58 to 73 percent, not only oppose the ruling but feel strongly about it. 

Even among people who agree at least somewhat with the Tea Party movement, which advocates less government regulation, 73 percent oppose the high court’s rejection of the McCain-Feingold Act.

Patriot Act: Russ Feingold discovers it is used for routine criminal cases

Both Russ Feingold and Al Franken discuss the Patriot Act and discover it is used for 'sneak and peak' surveillance of Americans homes that violates that Fouth Amendment. Law enforcement is using the Patriot Act to investigate people who are believed to be drug dealers.

The Patriot Act was passed with very little review and reflected the Administration position that another terrorist attack was imminent unless the Patriot act was immediately passed. The efficacy of the act is questionable. Only a handle of terrorists have been arrested since the law went into effect.

Contrast this act with the Affordable Health Care Act of 2009  that  Republicans want a 72 hour review on all amendments that are incorporated into it.
