Haaretz: Jonathan Pollard not allowed to attend father's funeral

The White House on Monday rejected requests to allow convicted spy Jonathan Pollard to attend his father's funeral in Indiana.

Pollard's father, Morris Pollard, passed away on Saturday at the age of 95. He was buried in South Bend, Indiana, without his son present.

When Rightrdia posted the original story, Pollard's father was in Israel. Apparently, the body was transported to the US for burial. 

Righatrdia supports the White House decision. Jonathan Pollard committed serous espionage crimes against the US on behalf of Israel.  He was convicted in 1987 and Israel has been trying to get him released ever since. 

As part of the plea deal, his accomplice wife, Anne, was eventually allowed to emigrate to Israel. She was hardly repentant and considers her husband a "political prisoner" which is rubbish. 

Pollard's wife, Anne, was sentenced to five years in prison but received parole after three and a half years. At the end of Anne's parole, she emigrated to Israel. 

Jonathan divorced Anne, since he believed he was going to be jailed for the remainder of his life and wanted to free Anne from the marriage.

Haaretz: Pollard family calls on Obama to let convicted spy visit dying father

Family members of convicted spy Jonathan Pollard have asked U.S. President Barack Obama to allow Pollard to visit his dying father.

The medical condition of Morris Pollard, Jonathan's father, has deteriorated significantly after a bladder infection. 

Pollard provided highly classified US intelligence including numerous intelligence documents to Israel. Israel has been trying to get him back since he was convicted for espionage in 1987. Israel may have provided many of the US documents to the Soviets to trade for Jewish "political prisoners." 

Pollard was convicted for espionage in 1987 and compromised hundreds of documents. He has been interred in a minimum security prison that also houses Bernie Madoff., 

If the US releases Pollard from jail, he will stay in Israel for certain. In view of the recent nastiness of Benjamin Netanyahu toward Obama. it would be best to let Jonathan Pollard rot in jail. 

The US has little to gain by releasing this criminal.

Haaretz Daily Newspaper: Benjamin Netanyahu sends letter to Obama asking for spy Jonathan Pollard's release

This letter will surely cause an outcry among the intelligence and military chiefs. It could also signal that the Israelis and Palestinians are making peace progress without the involvement of the US.

It will be interesting to see how the GOP reacts to the letter.

Obama should play hardball with Benjamin Netanyahu and no release should be considered until Israel  signs, seals and delivers a peace agreement with Palestine that defines the border between the two countries.  The issue of Bethlehem and the Temple Mount also has to be settled. Netanyahu's letter follows:

Dear Mr. President,

On behalf of the people of Israel, I am writing to you to request clemency for Jonathan Pollard.

At the time of his arrest, Jonathan Pollard was acting as an agent of the Israeli government. Even though Israel was in no way directing its intelligence efforts against the United States, its actions were wrong and wholly unacceptable. Both Mr. Pollard and the Government of Israel have repeatedly expressed remorse for these actions, and Israel will continue to abide by its commitment that such wrongful actions will never be repeated.

As you know, Mr. President, I have raised the question of Jonathan Pollard’s release numerous times in discussions with your administration and with previous U.S. administrations. Previous Israeli Prime Ministers and Presidents have also requested clemency for Mr. Pollard from your predecessors.

Since Jonathan Pollard has now spent 25 years in prison, I believe that a new request for clemency is highly appropriate. I know that this view is also shared by former senior American officials with knowledge of the case as well as by numerous Members of Congress.

Jonathan Pollard has reportedly served longer in prison than any person convicted of similar crimes, and longer than the period requested by the prosecutors at the time of his plea bargain agreement. Jonathan has suffered greatly for his actions and his health has deteriorated considerably.

I know that the United States is a country based on fairness, justice and mercy. For all these reasons, I respectfully ask that you favorably consider this request for clemency. The people of Israel will be eternally grateful.
