Hot Woman of Science: Morena Baccarin

Rightardia hasn't nominated a "hot women of science" for a while. 

Morena Baccarin was born in Rio De Janiero, Brazil. She was raised in New York City.

She was exposed to the world of acting at a very young age through her mother, Vera Setta, a well-known Brazilian actress.

Like her mother, who excelled playing vampires, Morena is one of the best villains on TV and has done a lot of science fiction work.
 
She was in Firefly and Morena also played  Adria, a recurring villain in the tenth season of Stargate SG-1.  Adria was the leader of the ORI, evil ascended beings who gained power when they were worshipped.

She currently lives in Vancouver, Canada, and has the lead in ABC's 2009 remake of V. She plays the queen of the aliens, Anna.

Wirehead first noticed her on SG-1 and thought that she was a stunning looking woman. She is a wonderful actress as well.

She also appeared recently on the Jimmy Kimmel show. She is a well-spoken complete package with a sense of humour.

Hot woman of science: September 2010

Leigh Spann is a local meterologist for Tampa Bay's news channel 8 "On Your side." She is a very able meteorologist with a beautiful smile.


Leigh Spann joined WFLA in September, 2007. You can see her every Saturday and Sunday on the Channel 8 6 pm & 11 pm newscasts. She came here from the sister station, WCBD, in Charleston, SC where she was the morning and noon meteorologist.

While at WCBD, she received the Award of Merit for South Carolina Weathercaster of the Year. Leigh has also worked at WMAZ in Macon, GA.

While living in Charleston, Leigh worked during several hurricanes and tropical storms that made landfall along the South Carolina coast.

Leigh earned the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation in 2008.

She also has the National Weather Association Broadcast Seal of Approval.



Spann, 32, joined WFLA in 2007.  "I am a morning person and so I've always wanted to be on a weekday morning newscast in a major market."

"I feel really comfortable in mornings and waking up at 2 a.m. is no problem for me," she said.

Spann said she also will be doing news stories relating to science, technology and the environment.

Leigh graduated from the University of Georgia with a BS in Geography and a certificate of Atmospheric Science. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and was one of the first people at UGA to graduate with the Atmospheric Science certificate.

Leigh lives in Tampa with her husband, who works as a producer at WFLA.

The Rightardia staff always lights up when they see the outgoing Leigh on Channel 8.  We suspect bigger things are in store for the lovely meteorologist.

Hot women of science: Danica McKellar

Danica Mae McKellar (born January 3, 1975) is an American actress, author and education advocate. She is best known for her role as Winnie Cooper in the television show The Wonder Years. She was later an author of the two New York Times bestsellers, Math Doesn't Suck, and Kiss My Math, which encourage middle-school girls to have confidence and succeed in mathematics.

McKellar graduated summa cum laude with a BS in Mathematics in 1998 from UCLA.

That's the good nows. The bad news is that she recently married.

Hot women of science: CERN's Irina Shreyber

When Irina Shreyber, 30, talks about some of her life's greatest passions, - elementary particles, dark matter and the Large Hadron Collider, her eyes beam. Shreyber, a native of Arkhanghelsk, a town in the Northern Russia, is a physicist at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

She is not by far the only female Russian scientist who works at this mammoth research center located on the French-Swiss border and known for one of the modern science's most ambitious, expensive and sensation-prone experiments: the Large Hadron Collider.

An international lab boasting some of today's most advanced facilities, CERN hosts 8,000 visiting scholars (80 percent of the Center's entire staff) from 85 nations and 580 institutes and universities from around the world.

As post-Soviet Russian science continues to face a number of problems, mainly due to the lack of research funding, CERN has become a great workplace for the country's aspiring physicists of all ages.

An estimated 200 scientists from Russia's top nuclear physics research institutes are employed there full time today, and more than 876 collaborate with CERN on the visiting basis. Several generations of female Russian physicists ahe worked at CERN.

"Women are very curious by nature, so a woman physicist is not so different from a woman in a humanities field," said Irina Sheyber with a quick smile when asked what it's like to build a career in the area of science that is still largely dominated by men.

She said she is already thinking of having a baby in the near future. "I'm already 30 years old, so it's just about time," Shreyber said. "But I hope to be able to work until it's time to give birth. At CERN, it's not that hard, one can work from home and there are kindergartens just next to our labs."

Rightqrdia salutes another hot women of science who has a complimentary mix of intelligence and beauty. Perhaps this lovely woman will discover the fabled Higg's boson or God particle.
