Al Jazeera: Yanukovych 'wins Ukraine election'

Viktor Yanukovich, Ukraine's pro-Russian opposition leader, has claimed a slender win in presidential elections but Yulia Tymoshenko, his bitter rival in Sunday's runoff for the post, has refused to concede defeat.

Central Election Commission results showed that with just 1.58 per cent of the vote yet to be counted, Yanukovich was 2.79 percentage points ahead of Tymoshenko, the country's prime minister, who can no longer overtake him.

The commission said on its website on Monday that Yanukovich gained 48.60 per cent of the vote and Tymoshenko 45.81 per cent, with 98.42 per cent of the vote counted.

Tymoshenko, who had threatened to call her supporters onto the streets if evidence of fraud was found, has put off until Tuesday a news conference scheduled for Monday.

'Democratic' election

Earlier during the day, international election monitors hailed the election as an "impressive" display of democracy and urged the nation's political leaders to ensure a peaceful transition of power.

"Yesterday's vote was an impressive display of democratic elections. For everyone in Ukraine, this election was a victory," the observers, headed by the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), said in a statement.

"It is now time for the country's political leaders to listen to the people's verdict and make sure that the transition of power is peaceful and constructive."

The OSCE verdict appeared to be tantamount to a call by the international community for Tymoshenko, to accept the fight was over.

The election commission projected the turnout among Ukraine's 37 million voters at about 70 per cent, 3.2 percentage points higher than the January 17 first-round vote in which 18 candidates competed.

North Korean Arms scandal point to the Ukraine

Thailand intercepted an aircraft from North Korea that had 35 tons of rocket launchers an missile systems.

The arms originated in the Ukraine and were destined for a Middle Eastern location. The Thais were tipped off by US intelligence.

The Russians recently lost a contract with Iraq to the Ukraine for weapons procurement and have been feuding with the Ukraine over a variety of issues including energy, weapons sales and  Black Sea access.

British scientists suspect that swine flu virus has mutated in Ukraine. Some doctors say that flu in the country has shown unprecedented symptoms, creating the effect of “burnt” lungs, the Daily Mail reports.

Sources said that while British scientists are running their tests of the virus samples from Ukraine, some doctors claim the strain is dangerously mutating.

These doctors even liken swine flu symptoms in Ukraine with those of the Spanish flu that hit the world in early 20th Century, the Daily Mail reports.

It has also quoted an unnamed doctor in western Ukraine as saying that lungs of Ukraine swine flu victims look strikingly unusual.

“We have carried out post mortems on two victims and found their lungs are as black as charcoal. They look like they have been burned. It's terrifying,” doctor said.

Meanwhile, according to the World Health Organization, no mutations have been registered in virus samples from Ukraine.

The organization was quoted by AP as saying that preliminary genetic sequencing in British and American laboratories showed the virus from Ukraine is similar to that used for production of the pandemic flu vaccine.

The WHO said that the infection rate in Ukraine is quite in line with that in neighboring countries like Russia and Ukraine.

Meanwhile, versions of an H1N1 virus nature keep multiplying.

“It should be called a Jurassic Flu – the DNA of a woman who died in 1918 Spanish flu was recovered from her corpse,” said investigative reporter Wayne Madsen to RT.

“The DNA was used to recreate this virus and some of the individuals, especially of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, are now involved in a process to develop the vaccine for H1N1. I don’t think it takes a detective very much time to figure out what could be a ‘cause and effect’ relationship there,” he added.

Russia is stepping into the campaign to help Ukraine tackle the virus. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has signed an order to provide humanitarian aid to the country.

The Ministry of Health and Social Development allocated about US$800,000 to buy medication for Ukraine which has been delivered to the country by air.

The Ukrainian Health Ministry has registered some 1.5 million flu and respiratory illnesses since the start of the outbreak.

Twenty two countries have sent aid to Ukraine following an appeal by President Yushchenko.

Pentagon purchases two Russian-made Su-27 fighter jets from Ukraine

Rightardia comment:  As a former Air Force intelligence office, The Major, was always impressed with Russian aircraft and would not be surprised at all if this story is accurate. However, the F15 is not really a dog fighter. It was a stand-off aircraft that used the Phoenix missile to destroy enemy aircraft at very long distances (100+ NM). The Su-27 Flanker aircraft will probably end up with the Aggressor Squadron at Nellis AFB, NV. The Air Force will then develop new tactics to counter the Su-27.

(Pravda.ru) The Pentagon purchased two Russian-made Su-27 fighter jets from Ukraine. The United States will reportedly use the Russian jets to train effective counter-operation efforts.

The Russian jets are a serious competition for the US F-15 fighters. The jets of Russia’s renowned Sukhoi design bureau proved to be more successful than their US competitors during a number of tests. The Pentagon has been trying to obtain the Russian warplanes, and Ukraine helped the nation do it legally.

The news about the deal between the USA and the Air Force of Ukraine appeared on the US-based website Strategypage.com. The website said that Russia’s Su-27 fighters were technically similar to F-15 jets, although the Russian planes were 30 percent cheaper.

Several Su-27 jets landed at Langley US air base in the summer of 1992, upon the agreement with the US side. Russian pilots examined F-15 jets at the base and proposed a simulated combat.

The US pilots did not like the idea much: they thought that it would be too risky to hold the fight above the base in front of photographers and TV cameras. They eventually accepted the offer, but agreed to hold the mock fight above the Atlantic Ocean, 200 kilometers far from the coast.

The scheme of the mock fight was very simple. A Sukhoi was supposed to fly behind a US jet, and the planes were supposed to switch places with one another. A US plane attempted to fly away from the Russian jet, but the Russian pilot caught up with the F-15 very easily.

The planes switched places, and the Su-27 flew away from the F-15 making a turn and gaining altitude. The Russian jet found itself behind the American fighter a couple of minutes later. The F-15 pilot lost the Russian aircraft out of sight and could not escape from it afterwards: the Russian pilot was keeping the F-15 covered.

The F-15 lost another battle with Russia’s Su-27 in the autumn of 2000, during the US-Japanese drills in the Pacific Ocean. Two Su-27 jets, covering the Su-24MP, conducted a sudden attack of the flagship of the US 7^th fleet, Kitty Hawk. The US aircraft carrier would have been destroyed in real combat conditions.

The US Defense Department is seriously concerned about the growing sales of Su-27 and Su-30 all over the world. Russia has been shipping these jets to India, China, Malaysia, Venezuela, Indonesia and Algeria for years.

Now the US purchased two Su-27 fighter jets from Ukraine. The US military command will now be able to study the phenomenon of Russia’s Sukhoi design bureau thoroughly.

Obama & Biden playing good cop, bad cop?

Moscow says it’s hard to figure out who is in charge of US foreign policy – President Obama or his advisors – following critical comments against Russia by Vice President Joe Biden.



The Kremlin said it is puzzled by Biden’s strong criticism so shortly after the two countries agreed to reset relations in March and signed crucial agreements during Barack Obama’s visit to Russia two weeks ago. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal after his visit to Ukraine and Georgia, Biden says Russia faces tough economic problems and has a weakened internal policy.

“I think Biden is rhetorically balancing the openings that Obama made in Moscow to the Russian leadership,” said Mikhail Troitsky of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations.

Troitsky added that what the US president told the audience in his highly publicized speech in the Russian New Economic School was amazing, as was showing how respectful he was toward Russia.

“Obama mentioned, for example, one thing that struck me,” Troitsky said. “He said that the hardships the Russian people had to survive through the time of economic reform were not in vain.”

Troitsky noted that Obama’s words contradict those of the many Western leaders who have said recently that Russia is becoming more authoritarian and that democracy is shrinking.

“The vice pesident is showing that if Russia is going to cooperate with the US, ’s not going to be because of the charm offensive, not because Russia is being convinced, but because it’s in Russia’s own interests,” the analyst said.

Super-Putin video

This is old news, but the news doesn’t always travel fast; I thought it was a catchy tune and a funny video. The ladies in the cartoon are interesting, too.



“Vova”, commonly known as Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, is a superhero according to Ukrainian band Dress Code, who have released a song devoted to the merits of the James Bond-defying, child-saving, universally adored Russian.

Banned in Ukraine, the video is causing quite a stir. The band behind the controversial homage is certainly profiting from its prohibition. Since the song “And Vova Rules” was taken off air for “political reasons”, the illustrated music video has become a huge online hit in both Ukraine and Russia, where, incidentally, it was never shown on TV in the first place. Putin propaganda, a big joke, or a publicity stunt? Whatever it is, the video’s already been viewed over 350,000 times.

The illustrations are pretty self-explanatory, but here are a few of the lyrics: “James Bond isn’t fit to shine his shoes. He’s a superman, he’s adored by the rich, by celebrities, by professors, by village folk and the West. He’ll always be there in your time of need. He’ll always protect you. If necessary he’ll whack bad guys, even in a toilet. Indeed, Vova rules, and, surely, he rules just the way it should be done.”
