Sotomayor asks more questions in an hour than Thomas has In years

 The Supreme Court's newest justice, Sonia Sotomayor, made her presence felt as the court began its new term. 

The Supreme Court began its new term Monday by indicating a willingness to limit how long a suspect's request for a lawyer should remain valid. The newest Justice Sonia Sotomayor wasted little time in letting her voice be heard by questioning the lawyers.

Just how vocal was Sotomayor? According to one observer she managed to ask more questions in an hour than the extremely reticent Clarence Thomas has asked "over the course of several years."

In the two cases on the docket, she asked as many questions and made as many comments as Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. The only sign of her newness was that she would sometimes forget to turn on her microphone before posing a question. A voice activated microphone would probably work well for her.

Obama Reaches Out to Latinos

When President Obama addressed the Congressional Hispanic Caucus last week at its annual gala, he was applauded 28 times in 17 minutes. The warm reception reflected the success of his outreach to Latinos, even as he has postponed immigration reform to next year and taken tough stands on undocumented immigrants.

 

The administration's words and actions on immigration have fostered wariness in some quarters, and left many unanswered questions about Obama. At the same time there's no question that Obama has stepped up Latino representation in Washington and outreach to the Latino community at large.

 

Most significant, of course, was his appointment of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. After noting the presence of a Spanish duchess at the gala, Obama introduced Sotomayor as "our own royalty" and "somebody who I've just come to adore."

 

Spanish-language TV and radio outlets have risen to new prominence in the Obama era. Univision, the Spanish-language TV network, made the cut last weekend as part of Obama's Sunday-show interview gauntlet, right up there with ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN.

 

Obama named two Latino Cabinet members -- Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis -- before he was inaugurated. The personnel process is ongoing. Just this week, the president named five people to a commission studying the building of a National Museum of the American Latino on the national Mall. On Thursday, as I was writing this column, he nominated three people for administration jobs. One was Marisa Lago, a Latina, as assistant treasury secretary for international markets and development.

 

All of the attention to Latinos is predictable and smart, given that they are a fast-growing proportion of the country and the electorate. They voted 2-to-1 for Obama last year and could be pivotal in a number of House and Senate races next year.

Daily Beast: Senate to Vote on Sotomayor today

Sonia Sotomayor's moment has arrived: The United States Senate is set to vote on her nomination to the United States Supreme Court today. Three-quarters of Republicans have indicated that they will oppose her, but with Democrats voting en bloc, she will be confirmed.

Here comes the judge!

A couple more Republicans also indicated that they'd vote affirmative.
Judd Gregg of New Hampshire spoke out against politicizing the
confirmation process, while Kit Bond of Missouri said, "There's been no
significant finding against her, there's been no public uprising against
her. I will support her."

GOP Sen. Judd Gregg To Vote For Sotomayor

WASHINGTON — Republican New Hampshire senator Sen. Judd Gregg says he'll vote for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, breaking with most of his fellow Republicans. Republican Sen. Kit Bond of Missouri will also vote for Sotomayor.

Nearly three-quarters of the Senate's Republicans have said they'll vote against Sotomayor, including all but one of the party's leaders. She is expected to be easily confirmed in a vote expected as early as Thursday.

The NRA is also opposed to Sotomayor although the judge has never made a ruling that pertained to firearms.

John McCain's WTF moment

John McCain is very concerned that Republicans are losing Hispanic votes because they represent a fast growing demographic.

But he also said he didn't know if he was going to vote for Sonia Sotomayor for confirmation on the Supreme Court this week.

I wonder if he understands how contradictory his comments are? The Democrats will remind Latin voters of the no vote against Sotomayor in the next two elections in Hispanic regions of the US.

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted on Tuesday to approve Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the Supreme Court. The 13-6 vote, largely along party lines, clears the way for a full Senate vote and her likely confirmation.    

How many Senators will vote to confirm Sotomayor? Our market shows a 95.0% chance she will receive at least 65 votes and a 20.0% chance of receiving 70 or more votes.  

2012 Republican Nominee   

The resignation of Sarah Palin as Governor of Alaska has ignited speculation she intends to run for president in 2012. There has been no official announcement from last year's Republican vice-presidential nominee but she remains the most traded potential candidate in our market for the 2012 Republican nominee.

Intrade: health care looking good, but Sotomayor to be dissed by GOP

Wow! The Democratic health care initiative jumps 18 point in one day. Sonia Sotomayor who looked like she would by confirmed by 75 senators or more, is now facing a GOP stonewall. Hispanics will be reminded of the GOP vote on Sotomayor in the 2010 Congressional elections. You can count on it.

At least Sen. Lindsey graham came to his senses.

Another protester interrupts Sotomayor hearing

Note: Sonia Sotomayor has never been involved with a court case that addressed the abortion issue, yet a protester called her a 'baby killer.' Why are GOP activists so rude? I do not recall interruptions like this during the hearing of Justice Roberts or Alito.

The first protest of day came just after 2 p.m EST, when a man started yelling insults such as "baby killer" from the back of the room before being removed from the hearing.

Latino Group,Presente Action, going after conservatives who haven't denounced Limbaugh

A progressive Latino organization is set to begin airing ads on Spanish-language radio on the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor. Presente Action's asks member of GOP Congress to denounce statements Rush Limbaugh has made calling the Supreme Court nominee a "bigot and a racist."

Reps. Adam Putnam and John Mica, both Florida Republicans, are the first two targets. Neither has denounced Limbaugh, despite requests to do so. Putnam is retiring in 2010 to run for statewide office.

Putnam started his political career when Jeb Bush was governor and hails from an agriculatural area of Florida. He is extermely conservative.

That is: "Sonia Sotomayor is set to be the first Latina, and the first Puerto Rican, to serve on the US Supreme Court. It is a proud moment for our community. Yet Republican leaders insist on attacking her:"
