Haaretz Daily Newspaper | Israel News: Mossad chief's secret U.S. visit meant to gauge American response to Israeli attack on Iran

Tamir Pardo, Mossad chief
"Mossad chief Tamir Pardo's secret visit to Washington earlier this month was meant to gauge how the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama would react to an Israeli strike against Iran's nuclear program, The Daily Beast reported on Monday.
Pardo's visit was exposed last month by Haaretz after top U.S. officials mentioned his participation in a series of meetings in Washington at a public hearing in the Senate."

Haaretz Daily Newspaper | Israel News: Netanyahu denies calling Haaretz and New York Times Israel's 'main enemies'

Bibbi identifies his enemies

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied telling the editor of the Jerusalem Post that the two greatest enemies facing Israel are The New York Times and Haaretz.

In an address to the Women's international Zionist Organization in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, Jerusalem Post editor Steve Linde said that the prime minister had made the comments during a private meeting "a couple of weeks ago" . . .

The report was based upon a recording of the meeting. Netanyahu said:

You know, Steve, we have two main enemies'. It’s The New York Times and Haaretz.
They set the agenda for an anti-Israel campaign all over the world. Journalists read them every morning and base their news stories … on what they read in The New York Times and Haaretz.’

Haaretz is no friend of Netanyahu and for good reason. It is antagonistic toward the right wing Likud party that Bibbi heads.

Apparently the PM thinks he and his political party are synonymous with Israel.

This winged warrior is a Mossad agent?

By Jonathan Lis
 Griffon vulture

A Griffon vulture – or a Mossad agent?

More than  one hundred managers of leading zoos from around Europe met in Jerusalem’s Biblical Zoo Friday. this was the first time the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria has held a conference in Israel.

Among other issues delegates got the full story of the “Mossad agents” recently captured in Saudi Arabia.

In January, Saudi media reported that a vulture captured in the country was sent by the Mossad, after its captors found standard Israeli tracking marks on the bird.

The vulture, like all other vultures born in captivity in Israel in recent years, hatched in the Biblical Zoo and was released from the Golan Heights.

The vulture’s story was described as “Birds as peacemakers in a conflict zone,” showcasing of the Zoo’s incubator and the return to nature of wild birds hatched there.

“Some of the project we initiate could be a bridge to our neighbors,” zoo director Shai Doron told Haaretz.

Haaretz: A Special Place in Hell for Leftists who love Israel

By Bradley Burston
I'd like to talk about this problem I have. You can't talk about it to just anyone. Friends of mine have it too. But you'll never see this one on Dr. Phil.

I don't care how big the self-help section is in your Borders or Waterstones, you're not going to find it there either.

It kicks in when you least expect it. And kicks is the word. Let's try to give it a name. Leftists who love Israel. And who feel – or are made to feel - like leftists who love Israel too much.

By leftists, I am including people who may describe themselves, or, without coming out to others, may know themselves to be, doves, peace activists, social democrats, Democrats, disenchanted former Meretz voters, disenchanted former Labor voters, disenchanted longtime non-voters, human rights activists, vegans, activist moderates, the ostracized Orthodox Jew, the ostracized Protestant, the broad-view Catholic, the proactive pro-social justice moderate, the anti-neocon, the girl or guy you just passed on the street in Israel. Me. You.

There was a time when this grouping represented little more than an intensely interested but effectively disenfranchised buffer between the pro-occupation right whipping Israel along the road that leads straight off a cliff, and the detest-Israel's-guts-as-a-philosophy-of-life extreme left, which sought to see the Jewish state, pretty much any Jewish state, go out of existence in any event.

No more. The success of the former, aided and abetted by the excess of the latter, has made the abyss all too tangible up ahead. These days, whether they believe it or not, leftists who love Israel are one of the nation's only hopes for survival.

If there's a rescue squad out there, these people are it.

Not coincidentally, this is the group most likely to become the target of the contempt and thus the very public venom of extremists on the far-right and the far-left, working in unacknowledged but full concert, keen to neutralize people they see as spineless, bloodless sell-outs.

They're warming up even as we speak – you're about to meet them at the bottom of this page, and every other. You'll know them by the foam at the mouth, and by their characteristic incontinence of reason.

Haaretz: Mideast peace needs prophets, not yes-men

by Margaret Atwood
Picture a minor prophet. Perhaps he’d be working today as an astrologer. He’s looking towards Israel and Palestine, consulting his charts and stars, getting a handle on the future. But the future is never single -- there are too many variables – so what he sees is a number of futures.

In the first one, there’s no Israel: it’s been destroyed in war and all the Israelis have been killed. (Unlikely, but not impossible.)

In the second, there’s no Palestine: it’s been merged with Israel, and the Palestinians either slaughtered or driven beyond its borders. Israel has become completely isolated: international opinion has been outraged, boycott measures have been successful, financial aid from the U.S. -- both public and private – has evaporated, and the United States government, weakened by the huge debt caused by its Iraqi and Afghani wars and lured by the promise of mineral wealth and oil, has cooled towards Israel and swung towards entente with the Muslim world. Israel has become like North Korea or Burma – an embattled military state – and civilian rights have suffered accordingly. The moderate Israelis have emigrated, and live as exiles, in a state of bitterness over wasted opportunities and blighted dreams.

In the third future there’s one state, but a civil war has resulted, since the enlarged population couldn’t agree on a common flag, a common history, a common set of laws, or a common set of commemoration days -- “victory” for some being “catastrophe” for others.

In the fourth, the one-state solution has had better results: it’s a true one-person, one-vote secular democracy, with equal rights for all. (Again, unlikely in the immediate future, but not impossible in the long run.)

In the fifth future, neither Israel nor Palestine exist: several atomic bombs have cleared the land of human beings, though wildlife is flourishing, as at Chernobyl.

In the sixth, climate change has turned the area into a waterless desert.

That, surely, is a desirable outcome, thinks the stargazer; but how was it achieved? Since he has the gift of virtual time travel, he leaps into the seventh future and looks back at the steps taken to get there.

The impetus came from within Israel. The Israeli leaders saw that the wind had shifted: it was now blowing against the earlier policy of crushing force and the appropriation of occupied lands. What had caused this change? Was it the international reaction to the destructive Cast Lead invasion of Gaza? The misjudged killing of flotilla activists? The gathering boycott activities in the United States and Europe? The lobbying of organizations such as J-Street? The 2010 World Zionist Congress vote to support a settlement freeze and endorse a two-state solution?

For whatever reasons, Israel had lost control of its own story. It was no longer Jack confronting a big bad Giant: the narrative of the small country struggling bravely against overwhelming odds had moved over to the Palestinians.

. . . The seventh future is within reach -- the stars favour it -- but the stargazer knows that many prefer the status quo: there can be advantage as well as profit in conflict. However, change often comes abruptly, like the fall of the Berlin Wall, the storming of the Bastille, or the end of Apartheid. The amount of blood shed during such transitions – from none to a great deal -- depends on the wisdom of the leadership.

How to promote such wisdom? It’s a prophet’s traditional duty to lay out the alternatives – the good futures, and also the bad ones. Prophets – unlike yes-men -- tell the powerful not what they want to hear, but what they need to hear. “How can I put this?” thinks the stargazer. “Something beginning with the handwriting on the wall…?”

Ria Novosti reports that Hamas prevented the assassination of Jimmy Carter

Ria Novosti reports that Hamas prevented the assassination of Jimmy Carter

MOSCOW, June 16 (RIA Novosti) - Palestinian militants failed in an attempt to assassinate former U.S. president Jimmy Carter during his visit to the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, Israel's Haaretz newspaper reported.

The paper said that militants with links to al-Qaida placed two roadside bombs at the Erez Israeli-Gaza crossing. The bombs were to be detonated as Carter was leaving the enclave.
However, according to Haaretz's source, Hamas discovered and safely disposed of the bombs.

Hamas authorities have denied reports of an attempted assassination, saying that its forces were conducting routine activities in the area.

Carter was in Gaza on Tuesday to meet with leaders of the ruling Hamas movement in an effort to persuade them to recognize the state of Israel.
