GOP bashes Obama, but offers no solutions

We are inclined to believe whoever wins the 2012 elections is going to have their hands full. We doubt that the GOP will be able to kickstart the economy using their traditional bromides of tax cuts and deregulation.

Right wing economics based on ideology will make the economy even worse. Nineteenth centuy economics simply won't work in the 21st century.

No Silvio, this isn't a California Girls' video.

West Wing Week: Set Your Sights High

West Wing Week: 9/30/11 or "Set Your Sights High"

Welcome to the West Wing Week, your guide to everything that's happening at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
This week, the President announced reforms to No Child Left Behind, traveled to California to hold a town hall on job growth at LinkedIn, spoke on what the American Jobs Act could mean for America's schools and gave his third annual Back To School address.

WIN: Families Earned More In 1997 Than in 2010

9/28/2011

By Doug Cunningham
For millions of workers across America family paychecks have declined or stagnated to such an extent that real median household income was lower in 2010 than it was in 1997., according to Census Bureau numbers. The AFL-CIO says it’s time to end the failed economic experiment of lowering taxes on the rich, dismantling regulations on business and following NAFTA-like global trade policies because it’s only led to an unequal economy that only works for the very richest Americans. American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten says there’s an urgent need for Congress to pass President Obama’s American Jobs Act. With a record 46.2 million Americans in poverty, Weingarten says there’s a terrible impact on families, kids and schools. Weingarten says that with parents struggling to find jobs and overcome economic hardship, schools can be “a source of stability for families and communities—and a place where students and their parents can get the services they need to have a chance at success.” The AFT says nearly two-thirds of school staff across the country report they regularly see kids having trouble in school because of hunger. To end high joblessness and reduce poverty the AFL-CIO says we need family-sustaining jobs, more investments in our future, and fair taxation.

Yet, the Democratic party is floundering. Little political change followed the Obama election and the taxes are as unfair as ever due to Democratic party inaction. A Gallup Poll sums up the situation for Democrats nicely:

Rick Scott "loses" more email

Rick Scott continues to tell Floridians, "I am not a crook."

TALLAHASSEE — The governor's office has admitted that emails on the governor's personal iPad were accidentally deleted, a potential violation of state law. An open-government organizationthe First Amendment Foundation, made the announcement  last week.

The Orlando Sentinel first reported the loss of the Scott' emails.

Florida has a Sunshine law and this is just another violation of it.

Rightardia wonders why only Republicans seem to have email problems. Sarah Palin had similar problems when she was governor of Alaska.

Floridians can rest assured that Pam Bondi, the attorney general and former Fox News bimbo, and the Florida Division of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will aggressively investigate Scott's email transgressions,  can't we?

Alan Grayson on Republican spin

Rightardia gets these humorous emails from Alan Grayson every couple of weeks. Frank Luntz was a "GOP pollster" at one time, but his polls were hopelessly biased.

If you have been hearing the term “job creators” a lot lately, it’s because Frank Luntz wanted you to.
As PBS put it, Luntz’s expertise is “testing language and finding words that will help his clients sell their products, or turn public opinion on an issue or a candidate.”  In other words, propaganda.

Here are some actual examples of Luntz’s fine work:

Don’t say “oil drilling.”  Say “energy exploration.”
Don’t say “inheritance tax.”  Say “death tax.”
Don’t say “global warming.”  Say “climate change.”
Don’t say “healthcare reform.”  Say “government takeover.”
And don’t say “greedy, soulless multinational corporations who don’t give a damn about you.”  Say “job creators.”
Luntz is like a serial killer of the English language.

As soon as I heard the term “job creators,” I said to myself, “that sounds like Frank Luntz talking.”  And sure enough, it’s right in there in Frank Luntz’s latest book, Win:  The Key Principles to Take Your Business from Ordinary to Extraordinary.  Here are Luntz’s exact words:  “You don’t create jobs by making life difficult for job creators.”  That’s under the heading “The Ten Rules for 2012:  What Americans Really Want to Hear from Their Representatives.”

Here is Luntz’s list of what we all “really” want to hear in 2012:
  1. I will never accept the status quo.
  2. I will never apologize for America.
  3. I will find at least one penny of waste to cut from every dollar of spending.
  4. I will never raise taxes in a recession.
  5. You don’t work for me.  I work for you.
  6. I will fight for the public’s right to know the cost and consequences of every piece of legislation and regulation.
  7. I will always prioritize American rights over the rights of those who wish to do us harm.
  8. I will work with anyone who will work with me.
  9. I will always support freedom.
  10. I still believe in the American principle:  of the people, by the people, for the people.
Note the absence of anything even resembling a policy, a program, or a solution to anyone’s problems.  So, for instance, the Luntzified Republican Party’s health care plan really is, “don’t get sick.”

And leaving Ron Paul aside, doesn’t that Luntz list sound like every single Republican candidate for President?  And almost every Republican Governor?  And almost every Republican Senator?  And, of course, Sarah Palin?
Which suggests this startling possibility:  If they all read Luntz’s book, then they all know how to read.
But that’s all they ever need to do.  It must be so easy to be a Republican elected official.  You never have to think at all.  You just let Frank Luntz do all your thinking for you.

I look forward to the day when Frank Luntz prescribes a haircut.  Then they’ll all have the same haircut.
I wish that, just once, Frank Luntz would goof on them, and tell them that what Americans really want to see in their representatives is a little, tiny moustache, just covering the upper lip, like, like . . .

Like Charlie Chaplin.  You know, like in the movie “The Great Dictator.”  Whom did you think I was going to say?

Here are some more Luntzisms that I just made up:
Vampires are “blood recyclers.”
Space aliens are the “differently specied.”
Plagues are “immune system strengtheners.”
Cancer is “internal genetic diversity.”
Death is “spiritual-corporeal differentiation.”
And nuclear war is “1000 points of light.”
But here’s the really sad thing about Luntz’s propaganda.  Like most propaganda, it’s just not true.

FACT:  In the last ten years, the population of the United States has grown by 27 million people.
FACT:  There are one million fewer private sector jobs in America today than there were ten years ago.
So much for job creation.  In fact, judging by  for employment, if the private sector were an employee, we’d have to fire him for incompetence.

But you can count on 2012 Republican candidates all over the country repeating ad nauseam “jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators jobcreators.”

As far as they’re concerned, it’s Frank Luntz’s world.  We just live in it.

Courage,

Alan Grayson

China Daily: The international view of the Palestinian quest for statehood

The conventional US and Israeli wisdom is that Palestine must reach a peace agreement with Israel to gain statehood.

Rightardia can not think of another nation in the world that had such a 'pre-qualification."

Rightardia thinks Palestine and Israel should agree to disagree. Israel has had 60 years to reach an agreement and had been torpedoing peace initiatives since the Camp David accords.

"The Quartet" which includes the US and it European allies is trying to get Israel and Palestine to the peace table for one last effort. Benjamin Netanyahu is saying Israel will have no preconditions but Israel is continuing a building expansion in East Jerusalem.

Israel plans to build 1,100 homes in Jerusalem's contested Gilo neighborhood. Palestine won't come to the table unless this building project is stopped.

Both Palestine and the US have made lucrative offers to Israel that have been rejected. Rightardia suspects any new peace initiative will ultimately fall apart.

Time is on the side of the Palestinians and they know it. Israel stupidly thew away it alliance with Turkey. If Turkey were to enter the next middle eastern fray against Israel, Israel could be obliterated.

Let's feed Bambi

Rightardia has some gun enthusiasts in the family and get catalogs with items like this deer feeder every month.

Isn't it nice that NRA members like to feed wild animals like Bambi and Thumper?

This is the not so nice part.

This is a tripod game hangar. If you feed wild animals with a feeder for many months to fatten them up,  they are easy pickin's when you shoot them from a blind.

Is this sport's hunting? Sarah Palin might think so, but Rightardia doesn't.

C'mon rightards, you know we are bleeding heart liberals!

Canon Imageclass 4570DN: good news and bad news

Rightardia had been using a Brother 7840W printer for about two years until the LED display became flaky. We were able to use the printer because it had a web interface that enabled us to print reports and change the printer's settings when the LED was off or garbelled, which was most of the time.

We were able to settle the Bother printer down with a firmware upgrade, but that did not resolve the LED display problem. We also called Brother who wondered if the printer was directly plugged int a power outlet or if it was plugged into a power bar or UPS.

We think this printer may have problems if the voltage or amperage on a line is too low. Eventually, we gave the printer away and the LED started working again at another location, but then flaked out.

So we did some research and purchased the Canon Imageclass 4570 DN which was a PC Magazine Best buy. PC Mag has been putting out a printer issue once a year for as long as we can remember, and its printer picks are objective in our opinion.

First, the good news: this is a fast multipurpose printer that can print, fax and scan. It costs under $200 on Amazon.com. Some of its features:

Laser printer category
Type All-In-One
Color or black and white black and white

Technology (laser-only category) Laser
Connection Type USB, Ethernet
Maximum standard legal size paper
Print directly from cameras do not
Nominal speed at standard resolution (mono) 26 ppm
Standalone Copier and Fax Copier, Fax
Printer Duplexing Automatic

wireless print server
We had a problem printing after removing it from the box and called Canon tech support who suspected we forget to remove a orange packing piece between the printer cartridge and the print drum. After we removed the packing piece, the printer worked beautifully. It is a lot faster than the Brother 7840W.

Unlike the Brother 7840W, this printer only requires a new Cartridge. The Brother requires both a cartridge and new drum.

The Canon tech also indicated the Imageclass had problems with some VOIP lines. Rightardia uses Bright House for it Internet and phone services and had had no problems with faxing with the new printer or the Brother.

Now for the bad news:. This printer does not support wireless technology so you would have to purchase a wireless print server if you needed this feature or purchase a different printer. Also, this printer has no Linux drivers which is a real bummer. There are Canon drivers for the corporate Imagerunner printers, but not for the SOHO Image class.

Rightrdia tried Postscript, HP Laserjet and Imagerunner drivers and was not successful in printing from a Linux PC. There is a way to print to a Windows PC by using Samba shares, but this is awkward and means the Windows PC must be on at all times  which means it functions as a print server.

So if you are an organization that uses Linux, this is not the printer for you. Otherwise, we really liked this printer.

Linux Mint 11.04 rocks

Rightrdia has been using Ubuntu Linux until it installed the latest 11.04 release with its Unity desktop.

The menuing system was different and many of the applications like Screenshot were missing. There were no applets to install on the taskbar either.

After two days of use, we dumped Ubuntu 11.04 and installed Linux mint 11.04. Both Ubuntu and Mint are Debian forks so Linux mint was a good option if you were as repelled by the Unity desktop as Rightardia was.

We did have trouble with network connection--both wired and wireless. Apparently, the updater in Mint was the problem. We used the Ailurus utility to install the new update manger and the next series of updates fixed the problem with network connections.

If you are interested in Linux Mint Katyas, check out http://linuxmint.com/rel_katya_lxde_whatsnew.php

It describes all of the features of this latest Mint release.

Veterans Administration disability claim timelines

The Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) and the Veterans of Modern Warfare (VMW) sued the Department of Veteran Affairs in 2008 for it slow performance to make timely determinations on requests for disability benefits to veterans. The VVA and VMW lost the suit.

However, the complaint contained some very interesting information.

Some of the facts contained in the complaint:

  1. the VA claims it takes 182 days to process the initial claim. However, it take 4-1/2 years to appeal an incorrect decision which is the case in 60 to 70 per cent of the claims. Yet 38 USC paragraph 5109B requires that the Va resolve appeals in a timely manner.
  2. there are approximately 25 million veterans in the US.  Between 5 to 8 million are enrolled in the VA health care system and 3.4 million receive benefits.
  3. most claims have merit: Approximately 88 per cent of VA claims result in a disability determination.
  4. although the VA claims to take 182 days to process the initial claim, it often takes more than a year to reach the initial determination. Note: the VA Regional offices have been caught fudging these dates by the VA Office Inspector Generals (VAOIG).
  5. Veterans who use a traditional appeal to the Board of Veteran Appeals have an  additional 4.4 year wait.
  6. if the BVA finds problems with the VARO decision and remands the decision back to the VARO, it will take the VARO 648 days to process the remanded appeal and fix its errors.
  7. to make matter worse, approximately 75 per cent of the cases that are remanded are appealed a second time to the BVA.  More than one quarter of these cases are remanded back to the VARO for another 500 day delay.
Rightardia has looked at congressional testimony and thinks most of the VA problems are related to the following issues.

1. the VAROs need to streamline their disability process to make it more functional. The Social Security Administration (SSA) disability process is more streamlined. Time and motion experts need to take a detailed look on how the VA processes disability claims to fix the process.
2. Use the Compensation and Pension  (C&P) clinicians to help vets who lack health insurance which was why these doctors, nurses and assistants were authorized by congress in the first place. If a vet has adequately documented his condition with letters from private practice physicians and other documentation, there is no need to have a physical by a C&P clinicians.

Is this a revolutionary idea: hardly! The SSA does not require that you see its contract physicians if the applicant has provided sufficient documentation.
3. Speed up appeals.  One solution would be to have permanent BVA judges at the regional offices in each state rather than the traveling judges that are based in DC. More BVA administrative law judges are needed.

Rightardia has said before that justice for many disabled vets starts with the BVA.

Rightardia got a kind note from the VVA on its civil law suit:

Bernie Edelman wrote:

The lawsuit was not won by VMW and VVA.  However, the issue remains very much alive.

The VA recognizes they have a problem, that the veterans they serve have a problem.  Under Secretary Shinseki, the VA has embarked on a number of pilot programs in an attempt to learn what can be put in place that will cut the waiting time for proper ratings to be decided upon.

Part of any “solution”, we believe, must be a change in the corporate culture of the VA (actually, the Veterans Benefits Administration), from its current adversarial nature to one that advocates for veterans.  This, however, is a slow process.

Rightrdia agrees. The VA is supposed to be helping the vet, but it isn't. Although the VA has many wonderful men and women, these people are not there to help you. At least, not yet!

RDT: America is getting uglier by the minute

. . .(W)e’ve been forced to listen to our fellow Americans yell “let him die” when confronted with the hypothetical ethical question of whether an uninsured man should die without care because he couldn’t afford the luxury of buying a piece of our “uniquely American,” for-profit health insurance racket.

And now we’ve listened to the audience at the latest Republican debate audibly boo an active—and gay—member of the military for having the audacity to be courageous enough to live an authentic life.

These unconscionable forays into the true Republican heart come at a time when a record 45 million Americans are living in poverty – a rate of 15.1% in 2010 - the largest since the government first began publishing estimates, in 1959.

After the 30 year Republican dismantling of the New Deal, America under right wing rule is feeling the strain and getting uglier by the minute.

Reightardia  agrees with Republican Dirty Tricks. We are embarrassed by right wing outbursts like this.

What in hell has happened to this country?

Too many Americans have become heartless morons who believe the pabulum fed to them by a small group of affluent fascists and their talking dogs in right wing media like Fox News and Rush Limbaugh.

Romney disses his alma mater

Mitt Romney criticized Harvard University during a foreign policy speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention in San Antonio, Texas.

Romney bashed what is often seen as a liberal bastion with anti-war views.

“That may be what they think in that Harvard faculty lounge, but it’s not what they know on the battlefield!” he told the vets.

Romney shows a narrow understanding of the military. Few soldiers really understand why they fight on the modern ballteifled.

In the The Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred Tennyson, this is made quite clear:

Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldier knew
Some one had blunder'd.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Romeny received received the business and law degrees that helped propel him toward his highly lucrative venture capital career. He was also the governor of Massachusetts, the home state of Harvard U.
