AFT President Randi Weingarten Calls For New Path Forward For 21st Century Education

by Doug Cunningham on January 12, 2010 - 2:49pm

American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten told the National Press Club in Washington Tuesday that education still operates on an Industrial Age model and to thrive in the 21st century our entire approach to education must change.

Weingarten said filling in the bubbles on standardized tests won’t prepare our children to succeed in life.

Weingarten laid out four proposed initiatives to chart a new path forward for education in America. They include a new template for teacher evaluation and development, a new approach on due process, giving teachers what they really need to help students succeed and changing the labor-management relationship in education.

The evaluation process Weingarten recommends is one that uses rigorous reviews by trained expert and peer evaluators based on professional education standards. She urges states to adopt formal standards.

Weingarten says both labor and management must understand their shared responsibilities to communities and work together to make progress on a new path forward for public education.
