Jane Erred: A Sad Republican story

Republicans have spent this week trying to downplay Democrat Kathy Hochul’s upset victory in this week’s special election in New York’s 26th Congressional District. The district was solidly Republican. Democrats claim the victory  was a referendum on the Paul Ryan's Medicare-ending Republican budget.
First, the GOP  blamed Tea Party candidate Jack Davis for splitting the conservative vote, but as The New York Times’ Nate Silver, Slate’s Dave Wiegel, and others noted, the math showed a Corwin win was unlikely.

S&P/Case-Shiller home-price index shows double dip

US home prices fell 4.2% in the first quarter of 2011. This was  a new post-bubble low and sent the housing sector into a double dip.

Housing prices in the Tampa metroplitan area declined 6.9 per cent from the previous year.

Congress passed tax credits in 2008 and 2009 for first time home buyers but the program was not continued when the GOP-controlled 112th Congress took control in 2010.

NMA disses Alabama mayor who won't accept FEMA trailers

The devastating tornadoes that swept through Alabama last week have left many homeless.
FEMA has supplied trailers to victims. But Cordova mayor Jack Scott has banned the temporary housing, citing town ordinances. Scott said he didn’t want the trailers to become permanent. But allows the police and businesses to use these trailers and said there is no double standard.
Residents have protested Scott’s decision but he hasn’t budged. Perhaps they should make do living in tents?

George Will: Sarah Palin Should Not Be Trusted With Nuclear Weapons

George Will admits Sarah Palin  will have a big impact on the nomination process. Will dismisses the idea that she has even the slightest chance of winning. Will suggests Palin’s problem:
“The threshold question, not usually asked, but it’s in everyone’s mind in a presidential election. ‘Should we give this person nuclear weapons?’ And the answer [in Palin's case], answers itself.”

Sarah Palin stars in Sleazy Rider, a rolling blunder

Sarah Palin's candidacy will split the GOP in two. Palin already is touring the country in a a bus called  “One Nation." The tour began at the Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally,

The bus is painted with images of the Constitution, the Liberty Bell, and  a map of the United States,

Palin wanted the bus to be able to express to America how much "we appreciate our foundation and to invite more people to be interested in all that is good about America.”

WIN: Vermont's Single Payer Health Care Law

5/30/2011

By Doug Cunningham
As the Labor Campaign for Single Payer Health Care prepares to meet in Washington D.C. June 3-5th, they have a shining example of what’s possible when it comes to single payer health care in the U.S. Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin has signed into law legislation that will make Vermont the home of America’s first single payer health care system. A financing package must still be passed by Vermont’s legislature and there are federal waivers required. But a strong grassroots coalition in Vermont led by labor supports single payer and will keep fighting to bring it to fruition. Governor Shumlin says Vermont’s single payer system treats health care as a right and not a privilege. At its June meeting in Washington Labor’s Campaign for Single Payer national meeting will celebrate the Vermont victory and discuss its strategic significance in the national fight for single payer.

At its June meeting in Washington Labor’s Campaign for Single Payer national meeting will celebrate the Vermont victory and discuss its strategic significance in the national fight for single payer.

Single payer gives the most bang for the buck and also makes it a lot easier for medical practices who previously had to process paperwork work for a myriad of different insurance companies with a variety of policies

Medicare , of course, is a single payer system and the Veterans Administration has a single payer prescription drug program that saves the veteran and the government billions of dollars.

Brave New Films: Are 1,500 U.S. Troop Deaths in Afghanistan Enough Reasons to End the War?

Memorial Day is coming up, and we've just passed a grim milestone: 1,500 U.S. troop deaths in Afghanistan. Enough is enough. The war isn't making us safer and it's not worth the cost, and this should be the last Memorial Day when we put military families through this kind of agony. Bring the troops home.

One of the other blogs indicated that the suicide rate in the armed Services is nearly as high as the casualty rate. Bin Laden is dead. Bring the troops home.

We need more facts and less opinion from polticians

A good example is the Medicare debate. In the previous article, Rightardia discovered that government run medical programs have lower overhead than those in private enterprise.

There are also extended debates with a lot of spin on what is the most effective way for the government to stimulate the economy. Should we cut taxes or expand social programs? Often the government does both.

This table was created by Mark Zandi of Moody's Analytics. Zandi was an economic advisor to John McCain in the 20089 campaign.

Politifact: Medicare overhead

This is an interesting article which suggests that the government's collective approach to health insurance is more cost effective than private insurance.

"There's a 1.5 percent to 2 percent overhead in Medicare," Boxer said during an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews on May 24, 2011. "The insurance companies have a 20 percent to 30 percent overhead."

Politifact ruled Boxer's statement half true. In one study, CBO found that privately run Medicare plans had 11 percent overhead, compared to 2 percent for traditional Medicare.

Private insurance can have 20 to 30 per cent overhead for individadual plans, but group plans have 11 -12 per cent overhead for private insurance.

Mediaite: Al Jazeera Video Captures ‘Western Troops On The Ground’ In Libya

The Al Jazeera report, first broadcast on Sunday, indicates the foreigners are British special forces (SAS). NMA reported weeks ago that Libyan rebel farmers had captured some UK SAS soldiers.

The British press that SAS soldiers are acting as spotters in Libya to help Nato warplanes target pro-Gaddafi forces.

In March six special forces soldiers and two MI6 officers were detained by opposition fighters when they landed in Benghazi.

The group were withdrawn and a new “liaison team” was sent in their place.

Hysterical Raisins: The Battle of the Brainless

The knife in Palin's hand is a nice touch and appropriate if you know much about the antics of Sarah Palin in Alaska and the John McCain campaign.

Palin kicked off her "campaign' by hanging with Rolling Thunder bikers.

Bikers are a diverse lot but the there is a biker subculture that is into sex, drugs, rock and roll, kinky sex and tattoos in a big way. Many bikers are under-educated.

Run, Sarah, run! Progressives will be waiting for you. We know what happened to the country when another moron named George W. Bush was in charge.

We don't need another Forest Gump as a president.

Gallup: Armed Services and Veterans Give Obama Lower Marks

Americans who currently serve or previously served in the U.S. military are less likely to approve of the job President Obama is doing than are those who have not served in the military. There is about 10 percentage points. This approval gap occurs across age groups.

For younger, post-draft-era veterans, individuals with certain regional, demographic, or psychographic backgrounds may be more likely to be Republican and more likely to join the military.

For older veterans, their service in the military may have led them to a more Republican viewpoint on politics . . .
